1/48 F-14D, VF-1.., or maybe F-14A VF.., no wait, maybe another F-14A.

Hello all,

Here is my second entry for this GB, well the thread for it anyway as I'm very much undecided what variant and scheme I'm going for. Initially, I was going for F-14D, BuNo 164601 of VF-31 'Tomcatters' during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003.  Delivered to the Navy in April 1992, this jet served with VF-124 before being transferred to VF-101 when the former Squadron was disbanded in 1994. It was then transferred to VF-31 in 2000 and went on to drop 19 bombs during Iraqi Freedom. The jet then returned to VF-101 in mid 2003 with whom it served until retirement in 2005. It now resides in Castle Air Museum in California. I had the pleasure of seeing it for myself a few years ago:

I then changed my mind and thought about BuNo 163898, which was delivered in December 1990. I don't have much information other than that on the airframe, but liked the low-viz and bomb tally.

The kit:

Aftermarket:

Fightertown decals, New Ware mask, Master pitot tube and Quickboost seats. Might also invest in and try one of the Quinta cockpit sets. Anyway, one of these two options:

Both would be loaded with 3x GBU-31 JDAM which was a fairly common load during OIF.

BUT....

Then I wondered if an A model would be better:

Which happens to have all the necessary extra sprues from the D boxing to make a late A model...

Along with some ECM bumps from a Hasegawa kit (these and the extra sprues were kindly sent by @coneheadff a while ago), a spare vinyl boarding step reinforcement plate, Quickboost TCS, Furball walkways and a Master pitot tube:

Along with the same Fightertown sheet as above would allow me to build F-14A BuNo 161276 of VF-154 'Black Knights'. 161276 was delivered to VF-2 in 1981 and spent the next 15 years flying with Squadrons based at Miramar. In 1996, the jet moved to VF-211 and then onto VF-154 in 1999 and flew as the COs aircraft up until it was scrapped in late 2003. During OIF, it dropped 45 LGBs, mostly GBU-12s (the F-14A was not able to drop JDAM).

Another but...

I heard the word Miramar.....

Then remembered I had this sheet in the stash (glad I bought this, seems quite hard to get now!)

And do this jet:

With the addition of a set of Quickboost seats and a Quinta cockpit set.

Decisions, decisions. But first, I need to finish a Hellcat, another Hellcat, a Rafale and start a Phantom. Maybe work will give me some special leave

I feel this.  I've conveniently enough got a bunch of vacation time built up that I've just been informed I "have" to burn by the end of the year.  Damn the luck.  :D

Nice! I've used most of my allotted leave throughout the year, days off here and there then 2 weeks being away in England. Also booked a trip to Malta next month over my birthday so that's more gone

All are cool Dave. I vote for one of these. They both look super cool.

I have a set of lo viz decal schemes for a D if you need more options to confuse you, say the word and I’ll send them.

Looking forward to seeing what you decide on; some really great livery choices there.

I've got the Fightertown Decals lined up to do Maverick & Goose's movie mount for my entry too. I didn't realise until after I bought them how difficult they are to find now!

Whatever you decide on, you'll be onto a winner regardless. I do prefer the - D, and VF-31 liveries are always my favourite... Those bomb tallies do add a lot too. Damn, I'm doubting what I want to build now! 😅
