1/72 Hasegawa F-14A Tomcat "VF-31 Tomcatters"

My entry for this most awesome of GBs will be Hasegawa's rendition of the Tomcat in 1/72 (newer tooling with recessed lines and positionable flaps). I don't plan on adding any aftermarket.

I'll be using decals from the box to depict Felix 202 while she was on board the USS Forrestal

but will you be adding your name to the build list.......currently it is suspiciously missing!!  :bleh:

That's unlikely for the foreseeable future sadly :fraidnot:

So the kit that I'm building is actually pretty old. The carrier film on the decals are actually slightly yellowed. So I decided (wisely, on hindsight) to test them. Lo and behold, they cracked.

So, would anyone happen to have a spare set of VF-31 decals in their stash? I can't find any aftermarket sheets with this particular scheme.

Thanks!

Thanks for the tip Rich! I'll check them out.

In the meantime, I have completed the work in the cockpit.

Thanks guys!

While waiting for the decal issue to get sorted, I decided to add some treads to the racing slicks which are provided in the box.

Using a book to get the proper height for the saw blade, it was just a matter of running the wheels against it to get the grooves in.

And we have treaded tyres. No need for aftermarket here!

Thanks! Just something simple you can do to level up the quality of your builds.

One nice thing about this kit is that Hasegawa provides a small set of photo-etched detailing parts. Here's the plastic turbine section dolled up with the PE flameholder.

And painted.

I made the same model a couple of years ago and had the same problem with the decals. the real problem are red decals, in the decal sheet you can find the felix logo and the writings to reproduce the design of the cracked one in case you want to try to paint the red

Thanks for the tip! I've managed to get a hold of a spare set and will see how that goes.

A small update for today. Masked the windshield and canopy in preparation for paint. Canopy was masked inside and out.
