Starling Models. HMS Rhyl 1/350

Recommended Posts

OK, I wasn't going to build this yet, or do a WIP. But I think I might need some moral support here, as this is my first ever resin model AND my first ever use of spraying enamel paint. @robgizlu has posted the start of his WIP for this ship, but under another name and a different colour scheme and knowing Rob, it will be the dogs dangly bits.

So, here is my lowly offering, as I said first resin kit, first enamel paint, on order from @Jamie @ Sovereign Hobbies and, I forgot to mention, my first attempt at creating a sea scape. Wish me luck.

The box and contents.

Really nice fine resin bits.

Lovely PE

And some excellent 3D printed parts, by I believe Black Cat Models. 3D really is the way to go.

p?i=a07fd7af6e6f522d7d32c6c83b9b3e6a

I've painted the red part and the boot topping and masked it so as to make a start on the 'sea'. I didn't use enamel for the red as I have loads of acrylic.

And now.............water (?)

Well, plaster of paris, poured onto crumpled up tin foil.p?i=18a1f861c85a8747d587a5e8760af672

I'm mounting her 'at anchor', so no wake. Keep it simple for my first go.

Not sure how I'm going to paint it yet, but acrylic paint is lurking at the back of my mind.

A few bits of building, by 'eck it's small.

p?i=c57495581821cde8d9bd7d3ee3877e56

"solderman" strikes again. I honestly couldn't think of any other way of making a strong join.

It looks a bit rough here, but a gentle rub with emery and maybe a slight bend, I didn't notice until now that it's a bit off line.

Cheers beefy. It certainly is a bit different from an all plastic model. I have to keep thinking......how do I attach this bit to that bit, can’t just plop on a bit of glue ?

Interesting build this will be, I find the idea of resin scary

You and me both, but I’m kinda warming to it. And it does open up a whole new catalogue of potential models. Warehouse ? The way I’m headed, I’ll need a ******* dockyard. 😂😂

I’ve just received my paints from @Jamie @ Sovereign Hobbies so I can move forward with this ship. Also, as I’ve never sprayed with enamel before, I thought I’d better have a practice.

Forward thinking ? By me ? Scary.

Anyway, what a revelation, I did a 50/50 paint to thinners mix AMAZING result. No clogging and a lovely smooth, consistent covering. First impression, much nicer to use than acrylic paint, I can only presume that as enamel doesn’t dry as fast as acrylic that this accounts for it’s ease of use and it is easier to clean the airbrush, for which I used plain old white spirit.

Now, I have a slight problem with the paint scheme in the kits instructions. It shows NARN22/507a as the colour for the hull and NARN21/507c for the superstructure. So it’s a darker grey for the hull than the superstructure, with me so far ? But, the paints I have just received from Colourcoats are the opposite, with NARN21 being the darker and NARN22 being the lighter. The 507a & 507c correspond. So am I right in assuming the instructions are mixed up. Certainly, the picture I have of this ship, although black and white are fairly clear that the hull is darker than the superstructure.

@Jamie @ Sovereign Hobbies I would appreciate your thoughts on this.

That's a typo for sure - the paint codes are backwards. You should use the NARN21 507A / G10 dark grey for the hull and NARN22 507C / G45 light grey for the superstructure.

Thanks. I thought as much.

Now I have all the paint I can bang on, so masts and bridge painted.

Next for the bridge is the window frame, once I've glazed it and then the roof. Oh and the ships wheel.

And the hull, just need to paint the wood and the deck. This hull grey went on really well, I think I'm going to like Colourcoats paint, it sprays beautifully.

Once it has cured I will probably mask the hull and spray the deck, I thought about brush painting it, but as it leaves such a smooth and consistent finish, I will spray.

The planking, I've given a quick thin coat, more to see how it went, I'll mask them when I spray the deck and then give them a better brush coat.

All but stepping the mast, that's the bridge finished. I'm wondering, as I glazed the windows, whether I should glaze the scuttles but that might be a step too far.

A few Bob's Buckles, ready for the signal wires etc which will drop down from the cross trees on the mast.

It looks far better at normal size.

Got to love 3D printing, the detail on this winch is outstanding. As it is for all the other 3D parts.

So, that's the deck done, few more ventilators to fit and some more Bob's Buckles to fit fir the aft mast rigging.

Hi Jon,

I am looking with interesting on your building- progress, model looks very nice.

Will you add any subtle weathering here (wash, drybrushing, touch of steel on the teeth)? I think the winch begs for it as do I 😉

I agree with you, this whole ship will need to be weathered, I guess she worked hard so I’m going to try and show this. Wish me luck.

Jon, just caught up with your new build, nice to see your still wielding your soldering iron to good effect.
As for using colourcoats paints I personally would not use anything else.

Just waiting for @Jamie @ Sovereign Hobbies to restock the grey for Langley to proceed.

Good luck with the weathering.

Bit of progress.

Added some more PE parts and I removed the vents as they were very precarious, so I drilled shallow holes to give them a bit of rigidity and reattached them.

Just need to dab a bit of paint on, to cover the excess shiny glue. And will probably reposition the fairleads, bit wonky.

And have fitted the aft paravane winch, most excellent piece of 3D printing.

Now, what follows next is my attempt at a sea surface. I'm not convinced  so I would be most appreciative of your views and criticism, please.

And be honest. I can take it.

@beefy66 when I started, the base had much more blue and green, but I think I over did the grey and white. Not thinking this out too well, I added white but in hindsight, the white would not be there on a swell. So, I’ll add blue and green and then gloss varnish. I’ll post the next version soon.

Thanks for your help, this water stuff is difficult, init.

I did something very similar with a test build Jon (my first try at drybrushing, not let it set and then going over with gloss). I fixed it by going over the lot with black, blue and greens inks (diluted, anything diluted enough will likely do and applied wih stapling action via a paint brush), which gave quite a nice effect in real life but hard to capture via camera. Essentially it was some kind of glaze/wash but pooled in the troughs to give a sense of depth and took the edge off or otherwise hid the white.

Or you could do that...

I shall give it a coat of gloss varnish, which if I'm lucky will pool in the troughs.

Starting to look like a ship. Funnel and bridge in place, not sure when I'll fir the masts. Probably when I've finished all the deck fittings, guns, paravanes and railings etc. Knowing me if I put the masts on now I'll bend them.
