The best MiG- 27 in 1/72nd scale

There is definitely a need for a new MiG-27 in 1/72 but your question about the best one currently available is open to debate

I've got this ArtModel Flogger in the stash (Scalemates link), which is a short-run kit with all the challenges that provides, but looks pretty good shape-wise.  I've previously built the old Hasegawa MiG-27, and it's a nice kit in some ways but needs a serious amount of work to get anything near accurate.  I think Academy have one which is "similar" but with engraved panel lines, although I've not built that myself.

Not sure how helpful that is but I am sure others will chime in

Chris

PS - just remembered, there's a Zvezda kit too.

I've got the Artmodel MiG-27K (Kaira) Flogger J2, its a limited run kit with a few bits of resin (cockpit, exhaust and Gatling gun) and  fit is so so, therefore expect quite a bit of filling, sanding & smoothing but at the end it certainly looks like a MiG-27 to me !

Hi there

Well let me say that after reading the start of this tread I went to my stash and I did some comparation of the Hasegawa, the Italeri/Zvesda, Model Art and KP (the MiG-23BN)  all in wonderful 1/72 scale

I found that the Hasegawa ir short of about 1.5- 2.0 mts so then a little more than 1.5 cm, weapons are aweful

The Italeri/Zvesda have very nice weapons and one thing that isn't there is a ECM pod related to SEAD warfare (this one include lots of weapons for at least 3-4 models)

For other part Model Art include only rocket pods and some bombs (but what include is lot of decal options) and the KP don't include weapons

I've only built the Academy kit but it's a close copy of Hasegawa's so I guess the dimensional errors are much the same in both of them. As well as the fuselage being too short (both in front of and behind the cockpit), the chord of the wings is too small. If I remember rightly, the same applies to the tailplanes. The canopy's the wrong shape, too.

Armando, since you have all the kits, how does the Italeri/Zvezda kit compare with the KP one ? Of course I know that one is supposed to be a proper 27 while the other is a 23 BN, so slightly different animals, but would be interesting to know if the shape of the Zvezda kit is decent, since it is quite easy to find (at least in my part of the world)

Thanks in advance !

Let me check that tomorrow Giorgio

OK Giorgio

Checking at the stash reveled both Hasegawa MiG-23 (already assembled paint pending) and MiG-27 (only back fuselage assembled) and a very old Gironixix Production LTD MiG-23BN conversion for Hasegawa (basically MiG-23 cannon and intake planes resin copied) all Hasegawa weapons are trash decals are pretty much basic no stencils (if you got this kits in the 70 and 80 they just fine but not now)

I also found the Art Model MiG-27 (the best of the bunch) and Zvesda MiG-27 (lots of parts including some MiG-23 parts like the nose cone, missiles and racks, some bombs) both have about the same lenght and look fine but comparing with the Hasegawa well this one is a small duck and the other two are like pelicans my guess they are short for about 4-5 cm on lenght in  1/72 scale

The Zvesda kits are boxed by Italeri those shares the same mould

This one include both tails large MF and short ML

KP MiG-23ML and MiG-23BN (this one include 2 front canopies one for fighter ML and one for the BN) are nice kits but other than missile or bomb racks no weapons included very nice decals for other part

https://www.scalemates.com/kits/kovozavody-prost-jov-kpm0096-mig-23bn-international--1135765

Here a good comment both afterburners are about the same size KP with Art Models (they are for other part different moulds, not the same)

the Trainer version or MiG-23UB is very nice be careful with the resin parts as they are very sharp and brittle, no weapons but about 12 different decals sets

https://www.scalemates.com/kits/art-model-am7210-mig-23ub-flogger-c--142133

Thats it

Btw best weapons are Advanced Modeling and Reskit

I remember to have examined the MiG-27 of Zvezda many years ago, without building it.

I thought that the size and sections of the fuselage and the main landing gear were much more accurate than the ones of Hasegawa and its clone of Academy.

Apart for the general roughness, I found three problems:

the worst one is some error of the angulation of the nose/windshield profile that are too on the same line; the change of angulaion should be more evident, but it's difficult to ake a correction without a longer windshield;

there is a step on the front fuselage sides that should extend on the side frames of the canopy; on the model, it stops behind the canopy; Hasegawa, Academy and Airfix floggers are accurate in reproducing it while the KP lacks of this;

the air intake of the 27 of Zvezda had a straight profile as the 23, it should be convex on its sides;  I think that the piece could be bent in some way;

the main pylon under the wingroot is the type of MiG-23, the 27 should have a different one; this can be easily scratchbuilt.

It could be that the back is low in the area between the air intakes and the rear of canopy, at least the MiG-23 of Zvezda looked so.
