Thanks :D

Of course one aspect is that I take closeups of the parts :) The layers are more or less prominent on different parts,  mostly it doesn't bother me but on some parts they start ruining details, like on the instrument panel.

The Air that I breath...

Howdy,

Moving away from the immediate cockpit area I got on with the intakes!

The insides of the ports for the intakes are pretty rough so I need to.....

IMG_4929.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

... TO DREMEL THEM!!! MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!

IMG_4932.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

Of course I destroyed the dramatic effect by using the wrong tool....oh well.

IMG_4933.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

Any-hooooo, the dremeling was successful and the inner part of the intakes fit nicely into the port.

IMG_4934.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

Yeah, you are going to see lots in there with the intake on :P

IMG_4935.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

A decent fit but the edges are rough and needs sanding.

IMG_4936.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

I go at it with 90 grit sanding paper, just making circular motions with the piece on the sanding paper and you get an even job.

IMG_4937.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

Much better, and I went at it at the rear of the front fuselage too since I had the sanding paper there.

IMG_4938.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

I cleaned up this little inlet that goes into the hull...

IMG_4942.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

Heh, it literally snapped into place

IMG_4943.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

Here is the fan front, I think it must be the most impressive part to have been 3D printed, it´s gorgeous!!

IMG_4940.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_4941.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

The fan front and all intake parts are primed in glossblack.

IMG_4946.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

The fan front was painted in Alclad Polished Aluminium...a bit shinier that the White aluminium I painted the trunks in.

IMG_4947.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_4950.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

Look how nice the fan front looks....too bad it won´t be seen without an endoscope :P

I gloss coated the trunks and then I shot pale burnt metal on top, changes the shine and gives a slight yellowish tint like the anticorrosive coating inside the trunks.

IMG_4951.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

Then it was time to start glueing things. The inner trunks in place.

IMG_4952.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_4953.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

Had to trim a bit to make the fan front trunking fit the intakes.

IMG_4956.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

and the fanfront in place. Interesting how much smaller the fan front is proportionately compared with the Tarangus one. Not to bash Tarangus in any way but there are differences.

IMG_4957.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

Already the fan front is hard to see in there unless you shine a light.

IMG_4960.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

Before putting the forward intakes in place there is a little detail to fix on them.

Through the notch in in the lower intake lip there is a  small rod. I made it out of piano wire, drilled a small hole and put it through....

IMG_4961.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

Cut the piece off with a piano wire cutter and filed down the ends.

IMG_4962.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

Then I glued in  the forward intakes, the fit is alright but the forward intakes are slightly too small so there is a step between the airframe and the intakes.....it will be dealt with harshly!

IMG_4965.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_4966.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_4967.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

Time to put in the RAT housing.

IMG_4968.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

Another smart move by Jetmads, they made 3D printed guide blocks that will help align the fuselage halves when they are joined, brilliant!

IMG_4969.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_4970.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

I had to dry fit....and this is a really nice fit, not Tamiya but better than quite a few injection molded models! I´m impressed.

IMG_4972.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

My brutal way of removing the step around the intake seams are simply to use my scraping tool and scrape the fuselage to fit! Yep it leaves marks but it´s really the only way and still remain sane. I can restore stuff later.

IMG_4974.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

And then a bunch of putty, it´ll have to cure until tomorrow when I finish up the sanding and restoring of details.

IMG_4975.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

The results of todays session :D

IMG_4975.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_4978.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_4979.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_4980.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

And there ya go :D

Cheers!

Looking great. Is that green stuff you’re using? My favourite filler but you can’t get it anymore.

Thanks :)

Indeed it is....squadron green stuff,  since when did it disappear??

I haven’t been able to get any in years and these days use Tamiya putty, although it’s not as good.

IMO Bondo is a good substitute for the Squadron green, and easy to come by (at least, here in the US).

exact colours aren't essential just that it looks right.

Well said, Sir! I agree absolutely. Brand new components and Airframes may look exactly alike, but given time, weather, use and UV light, surfaces change.

That looks like a fabulous kit, and you are doing it justice in your building methods.

It's odd to me to see an ejection seat that isn't black. I see they still used the safety handle. A method that dates back to the Folland Gnat seats.

It's very obviously safe, even to a casual glance (Not that you should be casual around seats) and, even better, there are no pins for the Pilot to drop!

Those 1/48th Viggens looked fabulous, BTW. And thanks for the size comparison explanation. I too always thought it was a bigger Aircraft.

I'll hang around and see how the rest of the build goes. Good luck.

I try to entertain :)

The thing with Viggen is that even though it's not that big it has a brutish look to it, wide and stocky with that immense RM8 engine swelling the airframe.

I've heard that during QRA flights the pilot in the identified aircraft felt nervous of having that beefy thing on their tail....even if they were sitting in a big bottom Phantom.

Viggen had a presence, you did not want to be on the wrong side of it :P

It was a brute!

Whoopsie....

Ok today it was time to get started on that sanding...

I started with 180 grit sandingpaper to get the worst of it...

IMG_4981.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

After the rough treatment I used sandingpads from 180 to 2000 grit. lovely things. When sanding it is important to led the sanding medium do the work...do not press! Smooth circular motions and go with finer and finer.

IMG_4982.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

When I´m happy it looks like this... and feels smooth.

IMG_4983.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

Time to redo the lost panellines....

I use mostly this tool ta draw new lines together with dymo tape as support for those straight lines.

IMG_4984.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_4985.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

When the lines are pulled I restore the holes for the lost rivets and fasteners with an awl.

IMG_4986.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

I check all the seams by painting primer and when I spot nasties like this....

IMG_4989.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

I use Tamiya putty to repair them..... Now I have to set aside the fuselage until tomorrow.

IMG_4992.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

I´ll spend the rest of todays sesssion with the side consols.

IMG_4993.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

I begun with painting some panels in lighter grays, all panels don´t match if you look closely at your refs.

IMG_4994.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_4995.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

Then I started detail painting trying to follow the refs as close as possible.

IMG_4996.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_4997.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

Then a gloss coat before decals.

IMG_4998.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

I have these cockpit gauges and placards and they are really useful to get that cockpit feeling, specially in this scale to make the pit pop.

IMG_4999.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

I used the  gauges from the kit sheet but added small square plackards everywhere.

IMG_5000.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_5001.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_5002.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

With that I then closed the decals with another gloss coat, did a thin gray wash and flat coated them.

IMG_5003.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_5004.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_5005.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_5006.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

Hmmm....why not put them into the cockpit while I´m at it?

IMG_5008.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_5009.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

Now we come to the whoopsie-part....

"What if I dry fit the seat in there as well ?" I thought to myself....

I brought the seat....."hmm kind of tight, isn´t it?"....of course I press harder :P

Crack! a headrest cushion shoots off.....as well as the saftey handle...

Crunch! the top part of the belts snap!

Snap! The seat pops into place and no force on earth can move it again!

Oh well, that dry fit became a wee bit permanent :P

No worries I found all the pieces and even glued in the saftey handle even if I know I will break it off again :P Now it looks like this in the pit.

IMG_5010.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_5011.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_5012.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

Cheers!

Great update!

The pit looks like it could be actually functional!!

Thank you :D

the only thing are the darn printing layers, it doesn't do any favors looking too closely at the pit. You better keep a distance to the kit....it will be very apparent in future updates.

I'd take special care of that seat safety handle if I were you :)

Thanks Ricardo :D

yeah well I knocked it off later again so I put it in a box so I wouldn't lose it again.
