I use the term loosely, but you can stress relieve it.

I'm intrigued... Where does stress come from in printed parts? I'm not questioning the diagnosis, just wondering where/how stress builds up as each layer is cured. Is there micro-shrinkage, or something?

Just try cutting the supports close to the part with a very sharp blade, moving it back and forth slowly and several times. Otherwise these parts, especially those microscobic ones, will jump off into the carpet and be gone forever. Ask me how I know :)

You might bev8n to something :)

I found that some of the extremely small parts did basically fall off the carriers, specifically in my case the Canard control surface actuators (the tiny triangular bits), other than that the model is a joy t work on , although I do miss the smell of plastic cement , I'd advise a coat of primer on the 3d printer pieces just to give it a key , I used Alclad Grey for the extra bite

the 3d printing aspect of the kit is in my opinion a game changer , the main U/C legs would be a nightmare to build in a conventional kit , in the Viggen one printer piece, , Love it !

On with the seat...

I primed the parts in Alclad gray primer.

IMG_4804.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

And the shot white aluminium over the seat frame

IMG_4805.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

Love the harness, painted in light ghost gray and XF-11 JN Green

IMG_4810.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

With that I put the seat together....I like what I see :D

I painted the parapack in the seat with dark green FS34079, the seat cover in XF-61 Dark green, the seat cushion headrest and anklepads are painted in XF-70 IJN Dark Green, the top headrest cushion is in RLM 25 Bright green (the cushions are a variation of the two depending on wear and when they were changed) and finally the seat parapack is in XF-62 Olive drab..

I washed it all in citadell Nulnoil and then drybrushed with flesh and light gray.

Now only decals are left...so I´ll seal it all in a gloss coat and put on decals and final touches before Iflat coat it.

IMG_4814.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_4815.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_4816.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_4817.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_4818.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

Cheers!

Most home 3D printers are either SLA where a laser beam cures a resin along a 2D path layer by layer or FDM where a plastic filament is melted by a nozzle which is in turn moved along a 2D path and lays down the part layer by layer. ( there are other methods but they aren’t very common any more or are used for printing metals)

In the SLA process the heat of the laser and the curing of the resin can cause thermal stress.

In the FDM process the heat used to melt the filament does the same.

In my last job we used to use a Plastic known as Peek as it’s clean room safe. We used to sub out 3D printing of fixtures as we didn’t have our own printer and with any job printed in the Perk ( like) filament the vendor would cost it at 2x the price because it was extremely difficult to print without distortion from thermal stress.

This is why in FDM printing anyway the nozzle temp deposition speed and temperature of the platten can make such a big difference to the end result.

It is also a big thing in injection molding, where the feed speed, temperature, pressure full time and time left in the mold can all make a huge difference to a molding. ( actually getting it right is a bit of a black art)

Btw those seats are works of art, very impressive.

Really nice work , for me the Printer harness was a game changer m no more dratted PE!!!! 😃

Thanks,

Yeah, the harness is spectacular and somehow the printing proces made the straps have a fabric like texture that looks great after a thin wash.

Fantastic job! The seat looks great overall and will defintiely get better when the decals come in. The color of the headrest is spot on and how you have made it look like a worn one is spectacular :clap2:

Thank you :D

Time to put the seat to rest!

I added the decals... lovely things that conformed  perfectly and they are thin.

IMG_4819.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_4820.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

And then I carved the lost ejection handle, yes I know it doesn´t look perfect but nor does it have to....no point detailing something that noone will see, I choose my battles.

IMG_4821.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

And the finished bang seat with it´s saftey handle in place as well .....now I just have to put it somewhere for saftey  where I won´t destroy it until installment in the cockpit!

IMG_4822.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_4823.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_4825.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_4826.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

There.. on to new goals!

Cheers!

Off to a terrific start, the seat's a work of art in itself. I think you've captured the look of that distinctive handle perfectly. :like:

Thanks :D it's simply a fantastic model :.

WOW!! The bang seat looks great. If the rest of the kit comes as the seat suggests, then it will be a hell of a model! Very good work so far and can't wait to see what comes next.

I'm a wee. It worried about the instrument panel.....I think the details are way to soft and undefined. I'll cook up something ;)

Today I started with doing some dishes.... em that is I  washed the resin parts in water and detergent as to remove and release agent from it.
But we will go on to the  yummie parts right away!

IMG_4828.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

Let´s have a look at what kind of RAT Jetmads brings us.
The parts are 3D printed and has exquisite details that made me feel a tiny bit panicky as I cut the printing supports. incredibly enough I didn´t destroy anything.

IMG_4829.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_4830.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_4831.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

After cleaning the parts I went ahead and inpaled them on toothpicks and readied them for primer.

IMG_4832.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

First I primed the parts in Alclad flat black primer and then I shoot Alclad gloss black on top.
The reason for shooting black first is that you need far less gloss and you get by with thinner coats that prevents details lost to paint buildup.

IMG_4833.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

I then shot a thin coat of Alclad White Aluminium on top of all parts.

IMG_4836.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

With all that the canvas is ready for details and washes and stuff. I can whole heartedly recommend this page for looking up refs, I doubt you´ll find better pictures of the RAT anywhere else. The page is run by a mate of mine so do tell him how good his page is :D
http://www.plasticwarfare.se/2014/11/viggen-details/

On to the painting!
I have no idea what these things are but they have a goldish-greenish tint to them and when the judges are squinting to see inside the RAT housing it´s fun for them to have somethinbg to look at :P So I used  Citadel Auric Amor Gold and then a heavily thinned coat of Balthasar gold and then a drybrush of Retribution Armor (yeah, all Citadel paints)

I then finished off with Citadel Nulnoil to get those details to pop.

IMG_4841.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

THen it was time to detail paint the RAT housing. nothing fancy really, some blue on connectors and sandt yellow for labels and some black and white for the gauges at the  bottom right.
And a Nulnoil wash on top of it all.

IMG_4844.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

Next it´s some cutting into the hull!
Well not as dramatic as it sounds since Jetmads had the foresight to give you the option of either opening up or let it be closed. No worries if you ruin the piece cut out since there is a 3D printed door with sweet details. Well the blow out door has to be cut either way but it´s like only covered by a thin layer of flash.

IMG_4846.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

So on with the cutting, a few pulls with a hobby knife and I was done.
Only issue I have is that the upper edge is quite thick, I don´t think I´ll do anything about it since the whole RAT housing is made to fit as it is.... choosing my battles, I am :P

IMG_4850.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

Ok I call the RAT done! I´m pretty pleased with it :D

IMG_4851.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

A dry fit into the airframe shows how much will show.

IMG_4854.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

And some pics of the RAT

IMG_4857.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_4859.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

With that I´m done with todays update!

Cheers!

Next little mini model that is a part of the whole is the front wheel well.
It took some searching to get good refs but I think I have it pegged down now :D

First a look at the 3D printed wheel well....look at those details! Though every silver lining has a dark cloud, the stripes from the printing process ar really hard to get rid of among all those details. Even so hard that I won´t even antempt to.

IMG_4862.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

Another thing is that the clear printed resin isn´t so clear...they need work.
The one to the left has been polished with Tamiya Fine compound and the one on the right is as they are on the ...emm sprue(?)

IMG_4870.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

Well a few goes with this stuff at the end of a cotton bud and you get ....

IMG_4869.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

...Something like this

IMG_4872.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

And to mask the clear face of the light I rolled a small ball of tac-it any spill is easily removed with a toothpick.

IMG_4875.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

On to the well it self.
I primed it in black and then I painted it in XF-73 Dark Green (JGSDF) with some post shade in XF-51 Khaki Drab.

IMG_4878.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

Then I got on with detail painting as well as I could see from the refs :P
Tubes in silver, gray and black, connectors in blue and labels in sand yellow and those redish brownish side panels in the well are painted in Raw Sienna.

IMG_4881.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_4883.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

Next some decals, this panel is for the rear of the well and is painted in light gray.

IMG_4884.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

And a couple of decals in the well too.

IMG_4885.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

Here´s how the landing light turned out with a bit of paint. The back is white and the fron is painted gray and the armature is aluminium.

IMG_4886.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

Then I sloshed Citadel Nuln oil all around....love the stuff for washes and filters.

IMG_4887.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

With that I dry brushed with matt flesh (works really well on greens and browns) put things into place and finished off with a flat coat.....

IMG_4888.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_4889.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

And with some finishing touches with AK pigments the nose wheel well was done

IMG_4891.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_4892.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_4894.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_4895.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

Cheers!

Thanks Ricardo :D I do take it slow with this.

It was hard to find refs for the wheel bay and as a little disclaimer, there might be differences between AJ and JA wheel bays but I followed the refs I found.

Oh yes, time to look at the forward fuselage and beginning on the cockpit.  This model is so big that I have to bite off small bits at a time and the cockpit alone will take a few sessions.
Today I´m beginning on the rear wall in the cockpit and started with checking the piece over.
What jumped at me emidiately when I held the forward fuselage was that something felt odd. It`s this weird line in the cast, it feels like a bad seam between two parts. Very odd but it will have to be dealt with at some point.

IMG_4898.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

The cockpit well looks really nice, it is very apparent that they 3D printed the fuselage and then made a mold of it since I find the very same layers as in the printed stuff.

IMG_4900.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

There are room for improvements however. There runs some cabled behind the seat and along the back wall, some quite prominent. I marked some spots where I would improve something.

IMG_4901.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

I then put in the seat to see what would be easily seen.

IMG_4902.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

Added the few kit parts.

IMG_4903.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

I then dug out my Punch & Die set to make some connectors......tiny things

IMG_4904.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_4906.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

Glued the connectors in place and then I added the cables.

IMG_4907.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_4910.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

I put the seat back again to see how things fit....broke off the ejection seat saftey :P

IMG_4911.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

Then I dry fitted the side consoles....looks nice, incredible details!

IMG_4912.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_4913.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

Then it was off to priming!

IMG_4914.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

MRP´s light blue grey for flankers is a pretty good match for the cockpit color

IMG_4915.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

With the side consoles painted they are put aside for another day and another update. I´m focusing on the back wall today :D

IMG_4916.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

The floor was painted in the cockpit color but the rear wall will be in aluminium.

IMG_4917.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

Masked off the floor.

IMG_4918.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

I painted it in Alclad white aluminium

IMG_4919.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

Then some detail painting  on the cables.

IMG_4921.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

After this I put down a Nulnoil wash, dry brushed with aluminium and then flat coated it all to realy take the shine off. With that the rear wall was finished.

IMG_4922.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_4923.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_4924.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

Let´s put the seat in for funsies :P

IMG_4925.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_4926.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

IMG_4927.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=

That was all for today, at least on the Viggen :D

Cheers!

Looking both great and correct to me. Wonderful!

Thanks :D...I do keep an eye on my refs. I largely ignore the colour suggestions in the instructions :P exact colours aren't essential just that it looks right.

Same with detailing, no point detailing things that just won't be seen... "choose your battles" is my motto :P
