Few picks of last nights work, got all the bulkheads done, it is a little nerve racking to chop bits off mind,

Started adding detail to the side bays, lost to do, some photo etch some scratch, got hold of eduards part 3 of their etch set which is where the grills and vents are from, some are moved lower to accommodate the catwalk im planning,

I got carried away and put two of them too high so need to move which shouldn't be an issue but then i tired putting in a dry half bended crane for the ships boats, this is from eduards set and ran into a problem, it's going to be too high and foul the cat walk so I'm going to have to scratch my head on that one and either abandon a few hours of work towards the cat walks or scratch build 16 cranes,

What if.......

Looking at your photo, I’m guessing the two rounded lugs are going to foul the catwalk ?
Why not snip them off ?

I’m supposing that you won’t be able to see right to the back of the area, so will your ‘modification’ be visible ?

My initial thought was to see whether the Trumpeter davits are as tall as the Eduard ones. I have the Eduard Big Ed set for this kit and wonder why they decided to duplicate much of what is already in the brass of the Trumpeter kit.

Great minds Martian as they say, or was it a mind mess?!,  that idea just came to me as well, they're as tall but lean forward so might work, do look a little plain though,

As you say it's odd they've duplicated so much, some of it is nicer some of it is about par. The frustrating thing I've found us that as a result you only really want half of each of the 4 sets for the model,

- I picked up a bundle the other day of another graf zeppelin but with a bunch of extras,  so I've now got sets1-  4 but won't use 4 I don't think and so look to sell that, the kit and a couple of bits on,

Being tight I've looked to use spare doors from eduard Graf Spee set as I have the mk1 set for her as well.  Bugger of it is though that eduard clearly intended the doors to be shown open as the internal side has detailing but the external is blank/flat, this creates another quandary,  1) do I fit them 'inside out' and ignore the fact that the internal side is showing  after all they'll be hard to see closely or 2) go to the trouble of trying to open up a whole load of holes for the doors to be shown open or 3) just discard and get others,

There's quite a bit to this carrier malarkey isn't there! I might switch back to taiho while I come to a firm approach,

I think I might have put one of my tentacles on the problem of the catwalk. The Trumpeter instructions show the davits overhanging the ship's side quite a bit. Would moving them outboard leave enough room behind them for your catwalk? It would also mean that the catwalk was level with the top of the davits, which would make sense.

Hi Martian,

I thibk your on to something there, to be sure there is a little bit to go on ths front of the assembly that I haven't put on yet which would move the whole thing slightly further forward, that plus a little gentle surgey on the rear should open the space out.

I'm hoping to get the catwalks started this weekend,  I've some 0.5mm sheet coming Saturday so as long as I survive visiting the in laws on Sat (wish me luck) I can then have a play with it on Sunday,

I've done another couple of platforms on Taiho since but there's little noticeable really so haven't taken a photo, I've some flush cutters coming that I'm hoping will make it more stright forward to remove the moulded on supports to the replace with etch.

I'm starting to think I'm a little mad trying two carriers at once,

Thanks

With air groups made up of Mitsubishi 109s, Nakajima 87s or Junker Zeros? 😁 But yeah, I would find that a single carrier is challenge enough. Regards, Jeff.

So here begineth the catwalks, lost more detail to add yet but finally it feels like i'm making a bit of progress, I used evergreens 0.5mm sheet, I kind of wish id gone for something thinner but aside using brass strip i think it would have been too floppy really. Also been adding some of the detail strips to the side platforms that are fitted so far.

I did go back to Taiho for a little bit whilst waiting for th sheet to arrive but she is currently on the naughty step!

They talk about projects taking blood sweat and tears well that's one ticked off, to be fair i may have been a little eager in trying to cut away the moulded on detail under one of her platforms,

c'est la vie - ive ordered some xuron sprue sheer 'detail' cutters, we'll see how they get on,

thanks

Catwalk 3 of 4 done, railings for these next i think, the down side is having a straight edge so close it shows some of the vents/grills are on the wonk, cant think id get them off without destroying them so hopefully wont really notice when there's a boat in there,

You won't.  [Ask me how I know - though the words "Ark" & "Royal" might be relevant.]

It does make one wonder if its worth putting it there to begin with, but its part of the fun really,

Looking forward to seeing your ark going again, she is mighty impressive BTW,

I plan to do a double build again but with allied instead of axis ones, likely Ark and Yorktown....mustn't get ahead of myself though still so much to do,

Aha, badly bitten by the complexity bug, another one comes over to the carrier dark side, but seriously though, one aircraft carrier is enough to introduce mental health issues, but two at the same time.......and then doing it all over again..........do you perhaps also enjoy being tied up and horsewhipped by strapping ladies wearing black leather ?       just asking  !  :D

Cheers

Lol - what can i say -  I like Lederhosen 😉 :whip:

Seriously though I think its because I quite easily get distracted so this way my distraction is just the other one of the two builds I have going at the same time,

at some point im hoping to try a scratch one in 1/350 as well thought that will be a long way off the rate i am going,

Gidday, to each their own I guess - and I'm not talking black leather vs lederhosen. 🙂

I mean methods of dealing with distraction. I find I have difficulty in concentrating on more than one part of a build at any time, particularly when I'm trying to work out what I have to scratch build. So two entire builds at a time? When I did have two on the go, one usually took a back seat.

Having said that, the KUTA GB starts today and I still have a current build on the go so I'll try to be doing what I've just said I don't do. Go figure. 🤔

I think you're doing well with both builds, and it will be interesting to see the other two later also, showing the design styles of the four navies.

    Regards, Jeff.
