Blimpyboy
Perhaps a secret design? I suppose if there was an FH.40 biplane Hurricane, there might have been a Swordfish Mk. V! Edited August 31, 2021 by Blimpyboy

My mental image is of the wings just crumpling like an umbrella in a tornado as it accelerates. 1
Blimpyboy
Grrr, I've re-jigged the link(s), so hopefully, it works now (says BB, madly pecking away at his keyboard, pretending he understands computers). At least the 'Mk. V' would be a reasonably easy conversion from a standard Stringbag. Still, it wouldn't make the 'plane look any prettier! europapete
It's ok now BB, that would certainly make an interesting "what if" . Regards, Pete in RI
EwenS
Now if the Sabre engine had been available for fitting in FAA aircraft in quantity we might actually have seen the Firebrand TF.II in front line squadron service in 1943/44. (300+mph / 550+kph). I’m not sure if that is a better idea than Sabrefish or not. Not so much fun. But at least the wings would have stayed on! tempestfan
"...soaring straight up like a rocketing pheasant" - that's about as likely as a VW Golf I Diesel beating a McLaren-TAG Turbo... At least that would give a reason to live for countless Smer ex Merit Swordfish...

Okay, okay, you've got me there! Admittedly, the Stringbag was no Fleet Shadower or Seamew... Why is it, that British maritime-flavoured aircraft seem to be so, so... less than beautiful? What, you mean in comparison with such land-based beauties as the Overstrand, R.E.8, and so on? Besides, neither of the examples you give above actually entered service. Fake noos. Yeah, probably because the Admiralty took one good look and just walked away in shame. 😉
