Scania 142 flatbed crane truck - FINISHED

Recommended Posts

I finished the secondary jib, there are 2 inner parts which extend all the way out (not in this pic, obviously).

With that, the build is finished except for piping which I will do after painting.

These are all the parts.

I was curious so I tried piecing it together which was not very easy because these connecting pins are still loose, of course.

20211108212340-b4c4f4df-me.jpg

Then, a problem. The other day when I tried to fit the secondary jib something came loose. I was more careful now but the crane cannot make the correct angle.

20211108212341-171f9e32-me.jpg

The encircled ram is just too long, although it is exactly the indicated size.

I took a guess and cut off 5 mm off the alu piece, and now it can make that angle.

Pretty cool.

Finally, I know how big this thing is, so now I can figure out whether my truck chassis needs any modification! I will focus on the truck and do the construction work before returning to the crane for paint. I haven't decided on the colour, black or yellow. And I'm going to need some lettering, I might ask my daughter to make a paint mask for the brand name. She's pretty good with stuff like that.

WOW :analintruder: Jeroen.

That crane looks like your building it in 1:1 scale.

Stunning work, :worthy:

/Bosse

Thanks Bosse, it's a really good little kit. It will look good with some paint on. I've decided to go for black.

I've restarted work on the truck, finishing the chassis. It's my least favourite part, especially if no cutting or chopping is involved. It's always more or less the same, all these suspension parts. Anyway, no chassis no truck so it has to be done 🙂

20211110092459-8e987bbb-me.jpg

The kit contains parts for an extended chassis, so it's already pretty long. But I now have the crane in between cab and flatbed. My plan now is just to shorten the flatbed, but if I don't like it I'll... extend the extension.

Front suspension is done. There are some lovely yellow sprues in the kit as you can see.

Oh right, I forgot you're gonna build a truck too 😁

Well, since HIAB head office is in Malmö, Sweden, I could declare my build complete 🙂

Completed rear suspension this evening, and glued on the KFS hubs. That always looks so much better.

20211110214649-634c5098-me.jpg

It's a 6x2, and the tag axle is configured as a lift axle, but the kit does not give you an option to lift it.

20211110214651-6af7d9a2-me.jpg

But of course I want it to lift, so that involves some cutting and filing.

20211110214648-3a2cc846-me.jpg

I just like how that looks. I did the same for the 143 chassis I'm working on (well, it's actually been in a box for quite some time), which is exactly the same except for the extension.

20211110215409-72cf3ab0-me.jpg

They're roughly in the same state, only now the 143 is probably getting jealous of all the TLC the 142 is getting!

More chassis stuff. Just about everything that should be on there has been attached. The engine and the mudguards are just dryfitted, these will be painted separately.

I'll be happy when that yellow is painted over 🙂

Time to get to work on the cab.

I was in a "shoot first, ask questions later" kind of place tonight so I took advantage. I built up the interior.

20211112211301-653e9979-me.jpg

I'm not really concerned with the interior for this build so I'll just paint basic colours in as few parts as possible. I plan to make a curtain to hide the bedding. Well, I plan to ask my wife to make a curtain to hide the bedding. It will be nicer.

And I built up the cab as well! It consist of 5 parts, excluding the interior roof and the door cards. Well moulded, no flash.

20211112211301-2ced7c42-me.jpg

I don't like to paint the separate "body parts" and then glue them together afterwards. I want a good strong "plastic weld" bond between the parts so the cab is nice and sturdy. Besides it makes painting so much easier.

20211112211302-85da9719-me.jpg

It looks very good, I definitely have a thing for low roof cabs. I converted the 143 cab to a day cab because I like that even better. A low roof day cab, that's it for me.

20211112213407-adcad5db-me.jpg

On the 143, I cut and re-assembled the side panels and scratch built the roof. It keeps making an appearance doesn't it? I'm very inclined to put it back on the bench after this build.

Now, I know for a fact that it's not possible to slide the interior in when the cab is ... well, a cab. But I'll just do "whatever it takes" to make that happen. For the 143, I cut off the bottom of the doors, but on the 142 the doors are moulded slightly differently.

20211112211302-e9443842-me.jpg

So in this case, I'll cut the sides of the floor to be able to slide the whole thing upwards. You can see how the doors are now blocking this move.

The dash can go in through the front window, and the side windows as well.

20211112211300-0c76a5ff-me.jpg

The front window attaches from the outside which is great. Just have to remember to put the rear windows in first because they're in between the cab's outer and inner walls.

Well, paint indeed. But first I had to fix the cab's interior so I can slide it in. With "fixing" I mean cutting, of course.

It wasn't too bad actually, just a little of the front, right and left. And a bit in the middle.

20211113184915-7e426e21-me.jpg

Worked real well.

20211113184914-8b5b478b-me.jpg

So well, I had a little trouble getting it out again. The advantage is I'm not going to need glue 🙂

With that out of the way, I prepared some other parts for painting and then it was time to throw some primer at this build. 3/4 of a jar of Mr Surfacer 1500! I like that stuff a lot, thinned with the levelling thinner you can just keep on spraying. I sprayed for over an hour and never once did the airbrush clog or anything.

20211113184916-7e95000e-me.jpg

That took care of the yellow!

Chassis and engine.

20211113184915-051c8bff-me.jpg

And a whole bunch of other parts.

20211113184914-0a1357d4-me.jpg

I should have time for colour tomorrow!

Awww.... such nice yellow covered over with boring grey ;)

Good progress though!

And it's nice to be able to model without wearing sunglasses!

I got a lot of painting done this afternoon and evening. When I built the trailer, I wrote down the colour mixes in a moment of clarity 🙂

The chassis is 2 parts German Grey and 1 part Black.

20211114220252-9d62eca9-me.jpg

For the engine I chose Cockpit Green. I'll pick out some details later but nothing special, the engine just has to "be there".

20211114220253-51592376-me.jpg

Semi gloss Black for mudguards and dash and a white front bumper.

20211114220253-7e329e72-me.jpg

The trailer is blue, a mix of 2 parts white and 1 part dark blue. So this should be the main colour of the cab as well. I went for a two-tone scheme with off-white (white, with a  drop of Desert Yellow).

20211114220254-a77aaaac-me.jpg

I'm not really good at the masking thing but this is quite adequate. Of course, some touch ups required but no bleeding to speak of. I'll leave most of it as is. A bit of weathering will hide a lot 😉

20211114220255-99a42081-me.jpg

20211114220251-3ce097fd-me.jpg

And some more blue stuff to finish it off.

20211114220254-4bb92095-me.jpg

Still to do, the cab's interior.

How do you get such results when painting. It's so neat and even you'd think it's the natural colours of the parts.

Just great!

Thanks Pat! I think a lot of it is down to the Mr Color levelling thinner I use. I thin the paint 50/50 with the Tamiya acrylics and that works brilliantly. It gives a really nice smooth finish, it just pulls the paint in real nice and tight and it cures fast. I airbrush "low and slow", with low pressure and low paint flow, almost everything with a 0.2 needle except for the X22 clear which is sticky stuff, I use a 0.4 needle for that. At least if I remember to get it and put it in, if not I'm reminded very quickly 🙂

Great color combo Jeroen 👍

Please do not over weather it, as it deserves to “be seen” :)

Thanks, I was actually planning to go easy on the weathering with this one!

Hi guys. So, during the week I spent some time on my "new and improved" hobby space.  I more or less dumped stuff in there after the move (now a little over 7 months ago), tidied up a little bit and then set about doing all kinds of other jobs that needed to be done first. But my room was still a bit of a mess, I even had some moving boxes still in there which needed unpacking. So I did all that and then set about rearranging my work area.

This was "before". As you can see the Benchvent takes up a fair amount of space, and that's not why I bought a bigger desk!

20211121201956-afea2a41-me.jpg

By the way, if you look closely, you will see some black smears on the white wall beneath the desk. For the record, it's not a good idea to drop an airbrush with the cup about half filled with black paint. Or any paint, I gather. Luckily, I always put an old sheet on the floor so that was pretty much spared, but there was paint on the walls and on my tank and compressor which were under the desk as well.... And yes, the Dutch language comes with built-in swearing.

Anyway, I'd wanted to make a "mobile spray unit" for some time so I set about making one.

20211121201957-172d6e85-me.jpg

I can move it out of the way if I'm not painting, which is most of the time. I made shelves for the compressor and air tank, and the airbrush hose runs outside to the right. It's very convenient!

20211121201955-b9b44e06-me.jpg

And I can now make full use of my bigger desk.

20211121201953-eb20fd8b-me.jpg

So, with that out of the way I used my mobile unit for the first time today for clear coating.

First I wet sanded the cab a little and did some touch ups. Then I clear coated with Tamiya's X22 which I rather like. Sturdy and not too shiny.

20211121202027-22857a38-me.jpg

The picture doesn't really show much but it looks nice in real life.

I did the chassis and mudguards as well and attached the latter to the chassis.

20211121202025-518c9333-me.jpg

The engine got some too and I started picking out some details.

20211121202025-ad1fea20-me.jpg

Some parts for the front... and the dash was decalled after the clear coat.

20211121202026-5e7d53d4-me.jpg

I cleanup up the rims, primed them in Mr Surfacer black and brush painted them Vallejo Dull Alu which is a good colour for "working truck' rims. The rims received a black oil wash after that. Then I set about making the tyres look better. The Italeri tyres are quite good but a little shiny. They respond very well to sanding (you know those tyres where chunks just keep coming off when you sand them? These are not like that.)

The first thing to do is sand them all around so the shine is gone. The difference is subtle but noticeable, even more so in real life.

20211121202024-cc9a26d6-me.jpg

Only thing is, there's 10 tyres on a truck. I've done 4 so far. I fill them with 1 rolled up sheet of toilet paper which makes them fit the rims better and makes them "fuller". Then, I apply Tamiya weathering powder, mostly "mud" first and "soot" after that. What you end up with are credible "street tyres", I think.

20211121202024-a65b80ac-me.jpg

The wheel nuts will get some more oil wash later, brownish. The rims are not quite so shiny like on the left, the right ones look closer to the real thing.

I took out the trailer wheels and gave them the same treatment, minus the sanding which I'd already done. I'll do more of the truck's tyres tomorrow.
