trickyrich
I actually fitted the nose wheel well back to front just to make sure I hadn't stuff up..... but yes it almost fits perfectly straight up!!!! I think Aires must have copied it from someone else!

But it is looking more likely that this will be the main build for me in this GB. The Tufted Duck/Turducken probably won't arrive in time for me to complete her, and that will not be a model to rush!! So on to plan #2, I may even start on the Aires cockpit first. Aires Resin Cockpits....... Driving modellers around the world insane trying to fit them for years!" 🤣 Yeah.. I have one for the F/J - and.. It fits nicely - with the resin parts still attached that should be sawed off.. I think.... Can´t figure it out.. Since I have Eduard etch too.. I "forgot" the resin cockpit ina dark corner...... But it looks good! Hope you are more clever than me!

modelling minion
There must be some sort of special planetary alignment happening because unless my eyes deceive me work has started on the mythical Draken!! And not only that but the Aries resin looks like it will fit! Something very strange is going on here.

Ok just a wee update, after playing with the F-14 I decided to do similar stuff with there. Get all the building and added PE bits out of the way then spend the weekend painting bits. The outer wing bits and tail/rudder are together and even added the wee PE strips to the trailing edge as well. As can be seen I decided to play it safe and abandon all plans to drop the flaps/elevons, so have some resin ones (will throw in PE bits for them as well) to anyone who wants them... cost, just postage. Started on the main gear....... ........and some other bits. All the right paint has arrived too, so no excuse not to continue I guess....... well give me a chance and I'll find one! Question to the Draken spotters 🤣.... what would have been the typical weapons load out for this wee beastie normally, and in this scheme..... feel the urge to buy stuff for her!
modelling minion
Good to see some glue on plastic Rich. One of the good things about this kit is the little sub-assemblies that you can get done out of the way. Not 100% sure about the weapons but I imagine she would have carried Aim-9L's or the Rb-24L as it was known in Sweden.

Hi Rich. A normal load on a J35J Draken would be two RB24J (=AIM-9P3's Sidewinders) and two RB27's (Aim-4 Falcon) The picture captions states weapon options for a J35J as of 1987. JRAK is short for Jaktraketer = Air to Air Rocket. Maestro does these pods in 1/48. https://www.rebell.com/svenskt/details/2-x-rocket-pod-m-57-for-j32b-lansen-j35-draken.html HTH /Bosse

So they do have the cannons fitted? the instructions for the Red tail one shows them as not being fitted.

AKAN = Automat Kanon in Swedish. , i,e Automatic Cannon in English. The second one was deleted and the space was used for avionics on late models. /Bosse

trickyrich
.... and yeah like a Phoenix it rises from the depths/bottom of the build threads! Ok first up, while I was away Beelzebub or maybe one of his demon spawn (Col, Modelling Minion among others ) visited this build and swapped out the Aires cockpit set!!!! It doesn’t fit any more!!!! Right….. to be able to close up this beast the cockpit needed to be completed or to a stage where I can fit it. I had planned to paint up the Aires cockpit…. but got lazy and then had a cunning plan!!!! Why not graft in the Eduard IP, looks nice and no painting required…… then things got a bit confusing. Eduard supply 2 IP’s a green one with no radar scope (for Swedish/Finish/Danish aircraft) and a grey one with radar for Austrian aircraft. But looking at phots of similar aircraft they have the radar! So I stamped my feet a said my aircraft will have radar so be it!!! Some quick work with a paintbrush and the grey IP became green. I’m actually quite happy with how it turned out........ even if it turns out not to be correct! The wheel wells were painted with Alclad Airframe Aluminium then glued in place, I’m really starting to like that paint. Right wheel wells glued in place, cockpit glued in place, glue nice fitting parts/fuselage together……… ……… Arrrrrr it doesn’t fit…… Aires!!!! Right after Beelzebub’s little visit no messing around this time out with the grinder! Wheel wells paper thin, check …… cockpit sides/floor paper thin, check …….. now fits together… check...sort of! Stick a few more bits on and she starts to look a little Draken like……. …..and there are a few gaps here and there, that rear engine assembly is a wee bit bigger the fuselage it attaches to. Plus the tail fit, gunport fit…… I won't be doing the usual dabbing filler everywhere mostly because I use lacquer paints now, and they have a bad habit of causing the filler to shrink, so I need to do something different. So for this build I’m going to try another method and see how that goes. So this has delayed any plans to start painting her this long weekend, but hopefully she’ll be ready to after it.

Good to see that your build is progressing despite any help from the Aries set, nice job on repainting the IP , strange that Eduard didn't give you a green IP with radar. There are some "interesting" fits between the various sub-assemblies and the main body of the kit aren't there, very interested to see how your different approach to dealing with them works out, so interested in fact that I shall call off the minions for now to see how you get on.

Col.
It would seem the 48th scale kit suffers from the same fit issues found in the 72nd scale kit You, however, will make it all look right I'm sure 1
