alt-92
I've some free time coming up, so I'll add another one It's the classic Heller H-75 Hawk, first issued in 1966 - although this is a 1980 Black box. I may grab another Smer rebox of this one btw, as long as it has the 1939 War games decals -- So what do you get in the box? Well..... it may be a bit bare-bones, but it's got nicely subtle raised detailing nonetheless. And of course the classic instruction sheet: Yes, that is the entire sheet. Really. The decals were a bit yellowed, but a couple of weeks in the window cleared them up. should they not work, I have a PrintScale decal set at hand as well.
TonyOD
I was perusing my Musee version of the same yesterday and wondering how it would sit next to the pointy-nose newish tool Airfix P-40, I'll be following this one with interest!
Corsairfoxfouruncle
These are great little kits, I built two of them last year.
Wez
It's hard to believe the RAF Top Brass tried to tell pilots who were reporting encounters with the new Fw-190 that they were up against one of these, talk about being in denial. That wartime colour scheme is interesting too. Good luck with your build.
alt-92
Right. This particular one seems to suffer a bit from random misalignments and pretty large ejector marks, so out with the mini-dremel it is: I'm keeping the stamped Heller in there just the divot in the flap edge needs to go, and the ugly one in the gear bay. Flaps? Oh yes, these are posable, actually. Note to self: fill the stand slot! The cockpit is limited to floorpan and seat as was wont in those dark days - hence the extra base and stick. And no IP as well. So let's make one. Plasticard and punch set. The insides will get something as well, I guess. Engine is secured with an extra block of styrene as backing because there's no pins or ridge. Cowlings were also mismatched, and have been treated with a round file and are more acceptable. It'll need some blanking material as well, I see otherwise, it fits.
alt-92
Buttoned up, a light primer coat turned up some remnants of seams to be handled. Also the bottom wing half added. The 'bendable' flaps are a nice touch but dropping them requires blanking off the gaping hole into the fuselage - so I'll leave that for the other Heller/Smer one This particular kit suffered from a very uneven bottom anyway, so restoration work is in order there. Currently inspecting which of the hatches for the guns should remain - the first 100 Hawks delivered were equipped with four instead of six machine guns. Out with the magnifier glasses and peruse the decals!
JOCKNEY
Looks the business, I think from memory the radial engine seems a bit small compared to the fairing it sits in. But it turns out really well. I did a vichy version but had lots of issues with tape letting the colours move around, it looked like a scene from Reservoir Dogs ! alt-92
Some progress The cowling guns and exhausts added, tail (which is... less than properly aligned in the molds). wing hatchworks reduced to the earlier 2 gun layout and rescribed. Thought about reworking the entire wheel wells, but I'll keep it at adding some strips of masking tape to mimic the canvas. Outer gun ports to fill. and some cleanup yet to do and then it's masking time for the not-so-clear parts - after all, they're 40+ year old.

alt-92
Right, after a couple of repaints I settled for Burnt Umber/Chocolate brown mix, Yellow Olive and a mix of Neutral Gray and Ocean Grey. Undersides were done in Flanker Light Grey (all Vallejo Model Air) The camera shows the greys much lighter than the bare eye has it. It is much closer to the real thing actually.

alt-92
It certainly looks more palatable after a final coat of varnish Decals from a PrintScale 'French Aces' set, not all of them are 100% but the H-75 at least checks out.
