Torbjörn Hanö Posted August 25, 2021 Posted August 25, 2021 Finished! I enjoyed every moment of this build. Will get my hands on Tamiya's Phantom soon. If you want to see the different stages of painting, you can find it here: All but one of the pix are close ups, since the model i huge even in 1/48. I made one huge mistake, let's see if anyone spots it. And it's ready for pickup, Axel! Stay safe, take your shots and keep glueing plastic! /Torbjörn 38 2
exdraken Posted August 25, 2021 Posted August 25, 2021 Really great Tomkitty!! But do not ask people to find mistakes! They will invariably find some... 1
binbrook87 Posted August 25, 2021 Posted August 25, 2021 That's a real beauty. Fabulous work. Especially on the 'staining' like weathering. Just perfect 👍👍 1

Acrylic colors dry to fast, and then they are impossible to remove without also removing everything down to the bare plastic. 1
TomW Posted August 25, 2021 Posted August 25, 2021 Extremely nicely finished Tomcat, the paintwork looks suitably weather beaten 😎 And only as you asked people to see if they can spot it......the only thing that stands out to me is the symmetrical exhausts, normally would be one open and one closed but it wasn't impossible for them to be both open when shut down so not as much of a mistake as some might say. 1

Ah, I didn't know that. Thank you! I'll replace one of them, since I painted and weathered thenother ones as well. My first jet since I was a teenager, so not as up to speed on these machines as I am on WWII aircraft.
SAT69 Posted August 25, 2021 Posted August 25, 2021 Beautifully built and the weathering and staining are very authentic looking. 1

Rob Sutto Posted August 26, 2021 Posted August 26, 2021 Nice work, especially the weathering on the underside. That Tomcat's begging to be displayed on a carrier base! 😎 1

Well done on the paint and weathering. 2 things that stood out though: 1. The orientation of the markings on the AIM-54s 2. It seems you installed the wings upside down Mark 1

Stupid mistake, but I realised it after the decals already were on, so no chance to correct it. I'll fix the missing piece, thank you!

Well, only real aficionados will see it. I did them a late night, my attention was probably elsewhere. /Torbjörn

Wouter1981 Posted August 26, 2021 Posted August 26, 2021 really like the weathering, especially the brownish tint. Is all the weathering done with oils? 1

Yes, all done with oils, except panel lines, I used watercolours for them (Payne's gray). On the bottom surfaces I used ochre. /Torbjörn 3 hours ago, Bobby No Mac said: I think we all know the answer to this! Yeah, don't we!
Paintychops Posted August 27, 2021 Posted August 27, 2021 Very impressive. I made the same mistake as you with the decals on the missiles, but no big deal. It's the one thing I think that wasn't very clear in the instructions, & besides, you hardly notice them with the jet in its upright display position. Top work though. Really good work on the subtle weathering. Very easy to go a bit OTT but you've nailed it! 1
