Airfix's 1:72 Junkers Ju 87B-1 (started)

Recommended Posts

Airfix's Ju 87B-1 won on the small poll I made last week regarding the next WW2 model I should buy. I'll pick it up from my LHS this Friday, and should be started next Saturday.

The chosen scheme will be the one on the boxart, the Ju 87B-1 for the Battle of France.

My plan for the future is to make a collection of aircraft in 1:72 that participated in the Battle of France and Britain. It'll be formed mainly with Airfix kits (Bf 109E-3/E-4, Spitfire Mk.Ia, Hurricane Mk.I, Bf 110C and Boulton Paul Defiant Mk.I).

The bomber section would be made up of the Revell Ju 88A-1, Italeri's He 111H (with decals for the BoB), and the Revell 1:72 Do 17Z-2.

I know Airfix released new tools of the Do 17 and He 111P, but those aren't available.

For now, here's the familiar boxart of the model. Sprue pics on Friday, and progress on Saturday.

Well guys, here it is, Airfix's Ju 87B-1 in 72nd.

I'll be starting the kit by building the propeller, since this is the most tedious part (apart from masking canopies) of any build.

Did I say I'd be starting tomorrow? Maybe I'll start it later today.

Parts are very well molded, no signs of flash or short shot parts.

I'll be painting the kit as the boxart machine.

Decals look great.

Decided to start with some sub-assemblies. These were the wheel pants, tyres and propeller. I had forgotten how fiddly 1:72 is for me.

The instructions do not cover them, but the IRL photo of 6G+AT does show the Jericho sirens on the wheel spats.

Sunday update!

Aircraft's nose has been built up:

And the instrument panel decal has been added to the instrument panel:

Airfix provides a hefty wingspar for the wings. Above it, one glues the control stick and seats:

I also glued the sidewalls. Some details were painted in black to give the cockpit some colour:

Instrument panel glued:

Wingspar/inner wing glued to the fuselage: 3OZ0S5k.jpeg

Upper halves of the wings glued to the wingspar:

And the lower wing halves:

Empennage glued to the fuselage:

Here you can see the ailerons/flaps combination. Airfix provided them as two single pieces, with the mass balances and actuator rods included. This mix makes for a sturdier construction of the wings.

Nice work so far. I built the B-2 earlier in the eyar, nice kit even if it has a few odd features. Look forward to seeing more.

Stay tuned then, there's more progress to come (most likely tomorrow).

I have the "desert snake" boxing of this kit.  I've seen some good reviews of it.  I'm following with interest.

It's a great kit, everything clicks together without the neee for filler.

It is a lovely kit I did one a few years back only me being me I converted it to an A.

That's a really neat looking Ju 87A @Marklo, wish a mainstream company would do it in 72nd and 48th.

Right, painting has begun. I first traced the camouflage with a pencil, and then painted RLM 71 (Revell 39) freehanded, trying to (sort of), follow the lines. Once that was done, I masked and painted the RLM 70 (Revell 40). I thought I could get away from sanding the paint ridges if the areas to mask were already painted with a darker colour. I kind of got away with my plan.

Then, after letting the paint cure, I applied the RLM 65 (Revell 49).

After letting the decals fully set for some hours, I matt coated the model with Revell's 02 Matt varnish.

I always hand painted the colours of the lower crosses to the dive breaks instead of adding decals, but this time, the instructions didn't call for any decals to be added. Nor the photo I found of the real plane showed any painted areas in black and white, so I glued the dive breakes painted in plain RLM 65.

Landing gear added. A very sturdy construction, with huge locating points.

Bombs added. Airfix provides two big bombs. I chose the bigger one.

Propeller added (whose shaft broke when I attempted to make it spin).

Now to work on the clear parts. I hate masking, especially regarding the frames on the Bf 110 and Ju 87.

Great job. How did you manage to turn that around in six days?!

Use of water based acrylic paints and no interest in filling and sanding the seams. I hate that part, so I skip it unless the seam is too obvious to the naked eye.

Yeah I imagine that would help... I use enamels and most of my building isn't building, it's waiting....
