RF-4EJ Final flight scheme (Now resurrected) ***** FINISHED****.

For this GB I will be using the new FineMolds RF-4EJ kit to show the aircraft in the Final Flight commemoration colour scheme using DXM decals. This is the first time that I have used this decal firm, so it will be a bit of an experience. I do have 2 other RF-4Es for different colourschemes also for the "Final Flight" decorations, so will make a bit of a smal collection when finished.

Great choice and I'll definitely follow this one. I hope you choose 07-6433 as I actually saw that one fly.

Here it is taxiing past the peace tower in November 19.

So that’s two of us with a Fine Molds kit and DXM decals. 👍

hopefully can learn from what you do. 😀

That is the aircraft that I am looking at doing as the fuselage film stripe is in a slightly different position (More forward of the fin) to the other 2 that I will do in the future.

I have finally got some work done on this after finishing another GB entry. I have glued the cockpit together and some of the other parts where it will help in the future of this build. Some filling will be needed on some parts and I will have to cut the ailerons and make them drrop on the real thing, which something that this model manufactrer has missed. I have painted the cockpit grey, but I am not sure at the moment whether to use the kit decals for the consoles and instrument panels or to paint them myself.

@Jabba I’m not sure either. So I’m going to try to paint the panels and if I like them glue them in; and if not I’ll use the flat pieces and decals. Slightly nervous about the many separate subassemblies; heat shields after painting fuselage.... 🤔

I'm painting the titanium first because I think the masking is easier that way. I believe Vallejo Metal Colour will be ok under the tape. It's a 49/51 choice though...

I have painted the cockpit in the colours that they are meant and then applied the decals with a fair bit of Micro Set/Sol. Although not brilliant they will do for my purposes. I will weather/highlight these slightly and then start building up the cockpit.

Thanks Dave,

I have now got the two major Fwd Fuselage together. As I ahve been going along I have been dry fitting the addition parts that go with certain sub sectiions so that all is aligned. That last two pictures show most of the parts that I require fitted together as a dry fitting test. So far it is going together very well with only a few seam joins showing, but these may disappear when glue is applied. Note to self, must remember to cut the aileron lines so that they can be drooped before I fit the wings to the fuselage.

The Fwd and Rear halves of the Fuselage have now been glued together. There is a very slight ridge behind the intakes at the joint, but this is not as bad as some of the Hasegawa kits that I have made. Mind you it maybe my inept modelling. I have also displaced the ailerons, the first one snapped off with a big crack rather than just moving, I did cut it deep enough for it to just move. The other stayed attached to the wing. Hopefully will get the Wings and Fuselage together tonight.

I have now got the majority of the parts fitted. The fin is still not glued yet due to sanding that maybe required in that area, so it is easier to do with this removed. I have filled all the joint lines, possibly over done this, but as I am using (non) perfect putty this will all come off with some water and a cotton bud. I aso still have to attach the wayward aileron.

Thanks both, it does help that the kit almost falls together. Sanding and the such like now done. I have a few parts to fit before I start painting. Now this is where I have a bit of confusion, in that the kit paint colours are slightly different from the DXM decal sheet and a book that I have from @Red Dot

The kit colours are as follows:-

Green FS 34102.

Green FS34092.

Grey FS36081.

Grey FS36375.

Whilst DXM and the book colours are as follows:-

Green FS34097.

Green FS34108.

Grey FS36081.

Grey FS 36375.

I am more than sure that the latter ones are more correct but could someone please confirm this. It is strange that Fine Moldshave done such good work and reseach on this kit if this is incorrect.

Not had much chance to keep up with all the GBs happening concurrently but enjoying your progress with this one fella. It looks to be a great kit so far.

Don't know if this helps with regard to the differing colour call-outs but I've noticed DXM specify Humbrol for paint matches in the F-15 sheet I have and perhaps this may have influenced them somewhat?

The book colours are definitely correct.

Andy

Thank you Andy. I did think that as you do state the colours consistantly through out the book, but with the different colours staed on the kit instruction sheet I thought that I had better ask.

I have the stated colours by Mr Color but I have never used them before. Can they be used with a brush and what are they cleaned with?

Mr Color can be brush painted but you have to wait for the underlying coat to fully dry, as the next layer tends to drag through the one below, and you can easily end up with a mess. As has been said before, guess how I know!

They are superb to spray though, giving a glossy coat that is ready for decals, depending on how picky you are.

Thin to about 60:40 with their thinners if you have them, and you won't be dissappinted. Clean up is with thinners.

Have fun

Andy
