Tea, rum and biscuits

I’ve just watched a fascinating film on Prime Video called Night Bombers. It gives a detailed account of the preparation for, and execution of, a ‘maximum effort’ night attack by Lancasters and pathfinders against Berlin in 1943.

In colour, it is narrated in the dry style only the British seem to manage.

Absolutely fascinating if you’re into WW2 in any way.

The man behind & in front was Don Benett. Read his books!

Air Vice Marshall Don Bennett? Pathfinder Force Commander; I can find one called Pathfinder. Any others you recommend?

To give you a mote detailed picture: Don was a brilliant pilot by himself. He got the basic nature of navigation in his homecountry in the wildernes, the bush. Anaöohy to Yeager!

As a pilot with seaplanes he mastered the navigation more and more. He got also the high ranking examinatipn of the Air Navigator. With this topl in mind and the need of twin engine bombets at the beginning of WW2,  he eas in charge for the transfer of Locked Hudsons via New Fundland to GB. Just to give you an idea.

If you read his navigation books, you may get excited.

It is not the bomb, which makes the success, to reach the target, to find the target at any time!

To prepare tools for not so gifted pilots to master the implsdible task too. You need hundreds of airctews on this high standard.

Beside this, the crews had to report him. He checked the target photos too. His offensive critics made crews more afraid, than AA fire!

Most modeller of a Hudson have no clue at all, what it means to fly it over the Atlantic.

There exists a wonderful film about it! Look for the DVD!

Well, to give you an idea. If you know how to navigate by map and calculate your leg, to calculate your fuel, than you  may start thonking about electronic drvices to make navigation easier.

Happy modelling
