Sherman Easy Eight. The first build!

Recommended Posts

This is the first model I've built since I was young about 20 years plus ago and I'm quite pleased with the result. Obviously alot to improve on and I've learnt loads in the process. Interested see hear peoples opinions and tips.

It is a Sherman what is not to like about it and the first one for a while you have done a great job only thing I would suggest for further builds look at old photos these things were packed with stowage around the engine deck.

great job 👍

What Beefy said. You've done a good job on it. Apart from stowage, it could do with some washes. For instance, those engine intake grills are crying out for a dark wash.

Hi Kris

Hello and welcome. As John says a dark enamel or oil wash will pick out the details. Then perhaps you could follow with some earth colour washes to suggest a bit of dust and dirt. Anything you don't like can be adjusted using a brush dampened in thinners. Once dry I'd also be tempted to give it a coat of matt varnish.

Pigments are another good way to easily add a bit of dirt, but these work best on a matt surface.

All the best,

Ian

Nice and clean for your first build. It can be really tempting to try and do every technique on your first model and get frustrated with it. Starting simple and addine more techniques as you build up experience is deffinitely the way to go.

Hi Kris

What others already have said and Wonderland Models in particular, baby steps, baby steps.  My opinion of your build also depends on why you built in the first place. If it was just for fun and a sort of experiment to see if you liked doing some modelling or not, I would have nothing further to add. But if you somehow is now "hooked" and want to improve yourself I would suggest that in the next build you pay more attention to the building/gluing stuff and check that everything is "aligned".  In this case I´m thinking of the seam, seen in the last pic, between the "lower" and "upper" turret. A detail like that can in general spoil an otherwise decent build. Anyway hope this help and that the other replies in this thread will keep you motivated to build something new :)

Cheers

G.

Hi Göran

I built it after getting inspiration from Al Murray doing a build video of a Bren gun carrier  (Al Murray does a WW2 podcast called we have ways of making you talk) and I caught the bug for modelling again after doing it as a kid years ago. It's definitely something I want to progress further in as it been great fun building it but I take onboard your comments about the turret seam, it's not the best and it's scruffy in afew others areas too. Hopefully the next one I've started which is a Panzer 2 will be abit better. I'm following a build video for that on YouTube which is been great for tips and techniques.

I lay claim to getting Al Murray back into model making when he was in Edinburgh for the festival a few years ago.

Totally not bitter he now buys from the Bovington Tank Museum... Only joking of course. The museum benefits from every penny they can get to keep their amazing collection of military vehicles for all of us armour nuts to enjoy. If only it wasn't 400 miles away from here.

They can work quite well on other surfaces as long as they are made into a suspension with enough binder. That can be water- or spirit-based. That's my preferred way of using them anyway, depending on the effect wanted.

I'm lucky I only live a 5 minute drive from the Bovington Tank Museum. They are hosting the South West Model show in a couple of weeks time which I'm looking forward to.

I have bought a few things from yourselves the last couple of months, really great service 👍

A nice tidy build. The thing I noticed was the lack of glue stains, which is good for a first build after so many years. I build models for the personal enjoyment of it, as long as you enjoyed it, that is also great. There are plenty of techniques that other posters have mentioned, like washes, filters and pigments. You have got a good starting canvas. Cheers Neil

I think that is a cracking effort as a re-entry into the hobby mate. You could always study and try out some weathering techniques at a later date if you wanted but could equally leave it modelled as just delivered from the factory.

All down to personal taste at the end of the day. Some will see the hobby as being about accurate replica modelling, others a form of 3D art. What's important is that you enjoy it.

Look forward to seeing what you model next!

Cheers,

John
