Hi Paul,

I really like the complexity you have achieved in the base coat. It is going to look great with the top coat. I also like AK Real Colors. Excellent to spray and maybe the best self levelling properties out there with their thinners. They're in competition with my preferred Gunze lacquers and MLT.

Really neat job on the pre-shading Paul, some great airbrush skills.

Thanks for the heads up with the tape, will give that set  a wide berth.

Cheers mate. 🙏

I’m going bonkers shading so I’m calling this a wrap on the fuselage. I’ll gloss coat seal it when its cured and then start on the black and metal bits.

This little fella has been started…

and I’ve started detailing the seats. This is an attempt to get that parachute cover texture happening.

Thanks ray. I’m really impressed with them. Gunze laquers mixed with mlt i’ve never tried but after this I am very open to new laquer experiences

Thank you Bertie. It took forever black basing the damn thing but I like the look of it.

WOW Paul, she's looking amazing!!!!   I love the unevenness of the finish, looks perfect!

I ned to do the same with both my F-4B and my F-14A, so will be back go over all your photos again.

Glad you like that AK Real Color paint, I absolutely love the stuff, it's my new fav after the MRP stuff, which is hard to get certain colours here. Their thinner is nice but that paint also thins perfectly with Tamiya's Yellow (ish) cap lacquer thinners as well.

You mightn't know this but AK also turn out Radome Tan in the Real Color range as well, I have a bottle.

I’ll definately be increasing my paint stash of AK in the future. Only 15 million gallons of tamiya stock to get through first.

Nice to know with the tamiya laquer thinner as I have that too. 👍

Masked the metal bits this evening and painted them with mr surfacer 1500 and MLT 50/50.

The black bits at the front I masked and painted with tamiya rubber black and a drop of sky grey mixed 50/50 with x-20a.

The canopy piece is just to protect the cockpit. I will be using the open parts.

Next up metallic fun! Really looking forward to that.

Good evening chaps.
Despite having the most debilatating desease known to mankind (man flu) I have bravely continued with the phantom.

I’ve been building up layers of tones and colours in the aft bare metal areas.

Still a way to go but it’s coming along nicely i think.

Thanks my friend 🙏

I’m really enjoying this build. It’s coming along nicely and things are going pretty well so far.
Unmasking the aft metalwork was pleasant. It looked fairly convincing adjacent to the painted fuselage areas.

51623011186_3d5e324a2c_b.jpg

I painted a few bits and pieces since last round, the AM ladder, metallic then hairsprayed then yellow to be chipped…

51623233908_d263562a1d_b.jpg

51623233993_89ecb861e6_b.jpg

…and the relevant red areas using danny coreman’s excellent reference book as a guide.

51622178587_71e98949e7_b.jpg

I started decaling this evening.
I had a nightmare with my previous f-16 builds so this time I’ve gone with a really heavy gloss coat, and bought some tamiya nuclear strength extra strong decal softener.
However that stuff can be pretty damaging accroding to the blurb on the packaging so i started off with the usual microset/sol route on the AM cartograph-printed furball decals and testing the water with a few stencil data parts first which went down a treat..

51623011151_6161a892b1_b.jpg

…so i carried on in that fashion, saving the extra strong decal stuff for another time.

My paranoia from my last build spilt over into cutting these decals too.
I cut as much of the film away as possible and punctured it where I could…

51622178622_93c3a31106_b.jpg

These seemed to work really effectively with them sitting down beautifully. Although it means they are more difficult to apply as they become very fragile. One instance rendered ‘USS’ (from Enterprise) mangled…

51623233918_6624ca3198_b.jpg

but luckily another naval vessel’s support came in to save the day. Thanks USS Independence.

51622178547_b5217671ff_b.jpg

With a couple of applications of microsol the decals are really settling down nicely.. heres a few examples of the current better successes..

51623010871_82e9d32bf4_b.jpg

51622178617_4ca07e5543_b.jpg

Granted I’ve mainly hit the big fun ones, so stencil data time is approaching too but hopefully thats fun too. Don’t you just love those big ugly old-school Hi Vis schemes?

51622178782_c9d784ca69_b.jpg

One annoying thing:
Furball havent supplied a wingtip or tailtip decal.
So they expect me to match the colour precisly from their decals and seperate that hard to mask painted area with a hairline black pinline to boot?! Wtf
I mean seriously this yellow stuff circled in red is not supplied…
