I agree with your input on the red trim. The same seems to go for the walkway markings.

Researching my VF-84 Jolly Rogers build there are wing walk areas but none on the fuselage, red trim is only on the moving parts of the airframe like the slats, flaps, airbrakes etc,  I cannot see any red edging to any of the undercarriage doors.  I wonder if that came in later after some ground crew had banged their heads on various doors and bits that dangle down. :hmmm:

I'm not sure of the reason in truth, you could be on the money with your suggestion,  all I know is it's a bit hit and miss as to which airframes had what! Still, makes painting the U/C a lot easier

White sprayed on today. The MRP shade took several coats, sprays beautifully but more layering required to ease out the pre-shading:

You may notice the slightly heavier looking panel line at the top of the nose/fuselage join. This was because, as @Retired Bob pointed out, if the cockpit is out by even a hair, the nose fit is put off. As you can see I suffered from this but some Extra Thin has nullified it somewhat and the black anti-glare panel forward of the windscreen runs right up to this panel so that should hide the worst of it. I'll know for next time.

Stabilisers and outer flying surfaces also done:

Lots and lots of masking ahead!

More soon and stay safe

  • DaveJL changed the title to 1/48 Tamiya F-4B, VMFA-323 'Death Rattlers', Chu Lai, 1967. Update 04/11.

Managed to get the Light Gull Grey sprayed this afternoon. Prior to this, lots of masking as you can see!

On with the Gull Grey, off with the masking:

Anti glare panel, some antenna and the horizontal stabiliser light also painted (ignore the two black patches on the windscreen, they're just overspray onto the mask!). As I'd hoped, the black in front of the windscreen has hidden the gap panel line between it and the nose cone (an error 100% caused by me!). I'm hoping to get the metallic areas painted over the next couple of days, more masking required for that , along with the remainder of the lights and the black bit under the nose. I've a little bit of overspray to fix on the port intake also.

My aim is to start getting gloss down by the weekend. Don't think I'll get this one finished in time but we'll keep plugging away!

More soon and stay safe.

Metallic bits and pieces done. Sprayed a mixture of MRP metallics. Looks a bit bland but will liven up with some weathering etc. Will be nice and sooty - I'm led to believe from some researching that the USMC pilots liked to light the afterburners rather frequently! (Pictures aren't great, light was poor);

I also painted the IRST on the nose cone (thanks to @Dansk for the info from the Daco book). Just about ready for gloss now. Aiming to get a coat done on each of the next few nights before starting the stencils on Saturday.

More soon and stay safe

  • DaveJL changed the title to 1/48 Tamiya F-4B, VMFA-323 'Death Rattlers', Chu Lai, 1967. Update 09/11.

A few marathon decal sessions over the past couple of days done, what a task. I was dreaming about stencils last night.

I ordered a set of the new Eduard decals which are a re-pop from the sheet found in their 'Good Morning Da Nang' kit. The originals were researched by Furball so I know they're accurate.

They're very nice indeed. They do have the new style of carrier film, but it's not as evident here as it is on the stencils. Anyway, the latter went on first. Plenty of Mr Mark Softner Neo applied before and after application. Once I had the stencils bedded in, I ran some more Mr Mark over the top and just left them to dry. I was able to return this morning and the carrier film just peels off with the aid of a pair of tweezers. I have to say, they look very good indeed.

Just takes a lot of patience to peel each carrier film off. Now, to the rest of the airframe:

My new go to decal solution!

A few more stencils need the carrier film removed and I'll look at the markings themselves. They look pretty good as they are so might just leave them and get a top coat of gloss on straight away. Will assess tomorrow.

More soon and stay safe

Not my usual scale to follow but having gone through most of this just now, I'm impressed with your work, & pragmatic approach to things, almost like the way I problem solve. Being a Vmfa-323 bird doesn't hurt either, that is a cool scheme & you've more than done it justice. 👍

Thanks for the kind words Steve, glad you like it. I'm looking forward to starting the weathering, I always find the build comes alive at that stage.

she looks amazing Dave, well done on the paint job, that MRP stuff is sooo nice to use. My big problem here is the only place that stocks it is always pretty much out of stock of most of the colours!!

Thanks Rich, I'm quite pleased with it. I know what you mean about MRP; there are 3 stockists in the UK and when I put in an order for what I need, one website will have all but one, the other will have all but a different one out of stock and so on. Postage costs certainly increase when that happens

Looks brilliant with the decals on, so many stencils 😳

Thanks Alan! Stencils as a concept are now banned at my bench, joining the Revell Tornado F.3

Speaking of the bench, an hour or so perched at it today. I wasn't happy with the shade of the brown on the tail bands or snake emblem, being too pale compared to my references, so I removed the Eduard ones and replaced them with the Cartograph printed examples from the Eduard Da Nang kit. They are very nice indeed.]

Although a tiny section of the head ripped off on the starboard side. Oh well, will say it's wear and tear when the weathering goes on!

Some last carrier film was removed from stencils:

I do like the stencils like this but think the insignia etc would be better served by standard printing. All the parts left are now ready for a panel wash and initial weathering.

It'll be race to get this done by the deadline, but I'm not prepared to rush it. Will see how I get on this week around work.

Really nice work Dave, the decals have gone down beautifully, you must have a lot of patience to get all the stencils on so perfectly mate.

Thanks mate! They did take a bit of effort but I do think the stencils were worth it. By contrast I tried a few Tamiya stencils and they appear a bit thick even over a high gloss surface.

The extra week for the GB should hopefully see this one over the line!

... when someone so far along says 'It'll be race to get this done by the deadline...' and I barely have any paint on mine...😅

Awesome looking bird, and those decals looked well worth the effort!

You’ve 2 weeks, get on it

Thanks mate, I would definitely recommend the stencil set!
