Eduard's (new tool Fw 190A-8) 1:48 Fw 190A-9

Here's a preview of my next project, Eduard's Fw 190A-8 that will be transformed into an A-9 from SG 10 by using the 14 bladed cooling fan and the broad bladed propeller. One thing I won't do is to lengthen the cowling 30mm. I guess 30mm IRL must be negligible in a scale model.

 

Here are the decals I'll be using (left, Aeromaster) next to the Eduard ones (right).

Apparently, 30mm = 0.6mm in 1/48

Here are the first batch of photos of the build. Cockpit first:

 

Then propeller assembly. I used the 14 bladed cooling fan and the broad blade propeller.

 

Wingspar glued. I made sure to have it aligned perfectly with the lower wing to avoid fit issues with the upper wings.

 

Upper wing halves glued to the lower wing. Happy to report that some light sanding was needed to the upper side of the wingspar to make the wings fit nicely.

 

Instrument panel and alignment piece glued to the right fuselage half.

 

Fuselage halves glued together. Excellent fit.

 

As you may realise, I forgot to glue the engine face to the fuselage before closing them, but the fuselage halves are flexible enough to make the engine fit without much effort.

 

Now this mountain of separate plastic parts is starting to look like an Fw 190A.

 

Ailerons glued to the wings.

 

Airframe completed. Now to let all the parts dry thoroughly before cleaning them with IPA and begin painting.

 

I have to say, I really like Eduard kits, I wish they weren't so expensive (even the Weekend kits).

Began painting the airframe by applying the yellow SG10 band on the nose and the yellow rudder.

 

RLM 81 and 82, plus the fuselage painted in 76 with some mottling. The yellow needed some touch ups here and there.

 

Wings done:

 

Natural metal panels painted. I used Revell 91 Steel for them.

 

I'll try to add the decals today.

Decals on! The decals were from Aeromaster. A bit thick, and the really liked my fingers (I ended up lifting two because the decal sticked to my finger). The swastikas are also way too big.

All my models are like that. I shy away from filling/sanding and weathering. Plus, I use water based acrylics, which dry in little time.

Landing gear legs glued. I had my doubts regarding how solid the positioning of these pieces would be, but Eduard engineered them in such a way that the struts will seat with the correct 190 stance.

 

Now, I'll wait some hours before gluing the wheels and landing gear doors.
