I present for your inspection, one of 12 F-4B Phantoms which were modified to F-4G standard with a datalink system and experimental jungle camouflage. The F-4Gs served during 1966 with a series of carriers and squadrons cruising Yankee Station, flying missions over Vietnam. One aircraft failed to return.

y4mS5t_hPC2AnFb7eDayUGzDj1u32Yu1SEIhRt7_

The camouflage paint was not durable in the maritime environment.

The undersides were left in their original gloss paint.

y4mblHKrxCzAs17bU1_z0ykJnXaC4Uj1TJdsEle0

Different aircraft, different date, different markings. The Datalink Dozen changed their appearance every time they were reassigned.

The camouflage experiment was not continued. The datalink system was not incorporated in the F-4 but went on to great success in the F-14 Tomcat.

Completed This Day

Please give some love to a Phantom F-4J of 74(F) Squadron RAF, all prettied up for the NATO Tiger Meet of 1988 (and carrying a little reminder of the squadron's eleven year association with the E E Lightning).

y4mzstsjMHtQIUvkTe5TmgkOr_p_gDWEHMl1ca2C

Is that supposed to be a tiger-skin rug?

y4mZ_mxqDA76Ti1wp_Aod5mOB5jvW1P50XsiI01_

Cockpit enhanced with Quinta 3D decals.

y4msGW_PTNKeCntJfwT98woy3jCdV_ATWll-85-S

That's a de Havilland Firestreak missile on the stbd inboard pylon. The Lightning's heat seeking missile.

y4m1xjidc12K2WKMsKjMZQRDB5oJ-X2GK-72y81z

Even tidied up for a party, a Phantom oozes.

y4mr3Mg7b5LpofNx2Y8mZA6fh6HMgoOSpIZycP6L

And yes, you can just glimpse the engine face deep inside the intake.

More photos at the end of this build thread...

Here's my 1/72 Finemolds F-4C. I used the kit decals, added some weapons from a Finemolds weapons set. Painted with MRP and some Tamiya and Vallejo. A fun build to do.

Phantom FGR2, XV499, 41 Squadron RAF Coningsby, 1976.

This is the 1/72nd Fujumi kit with the EMI reconnaissance pod from the Airfix kit and a photoflash pod  modified from one of the kit wing tanks. The aircraft is modelled from the machine shown in an RAF training film, 'Oversight'. During the course of filming there seemed to be some changes in aircraft markings in terms of zaps and a possible change in underwing serial position.  WIP thread is here:

The white outlined 'O' is a temporary fix until I can find something a bit better.

Thanks to Dave for hosting this group and Enzo for the oversight.

Hello everyone I present to you my two builds of 69-304. The early life of this airframe flew with the R.A.A.F. while waiting for their F-111 deliveries.

"Semper Aggressus" - 23 Squadron Phantom FGR2 of Wattisham late 1970s:

2021-11-24_03-48-23

20211124_115749

20211124_120243

20211124_115858

Revell kit, Mr. Paints, Eduard cockpit and seat belt etch (plus a few placards), Meng Sidewinders (there would have been 4 but I managed to "ping" one of the fins into the carpet monster's hungry mouth) and Flightpath ladder.

I'm finishing another 23 Sqn FGR2 in KUTA (ADV Grey with RWR & ILS) and could also build an original tail version in ADV grey and an RWR/ILS camouflage version from the stash.

Better late than never but here's the Kurnass built!

tn_Kurnass (124) tn_Kurnass (131) tn_Kurnass (132) tn_Kurnass (134) tn_Kurnass (137)

Thanks to everyone for probably the highest quality GB I've ever been in. The Phantom is a truly iconic, once-in-a-generation aircraft and you did it proud!
