Short S.1 Cockle

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

This is my first model posted here in Britmodeller. 😀

The Short Cockle is a quite good model. I did do some minor changes:

- The fuselage vertical markings were removed;

- The motors where improved;

- I decided to paint the fuselage blue and the wings silver.

Best regards,

Octávio

Beautifully made model Octávio :like:. Did the wooden stands come with the kit or did you make them?

Pete

Hi Pete.

The wooden stands come with the kit.

They were painted with a coat of Humbrol 63 (sand) was afterward I applied varoius shades of brown with water pencils.

What a charming entry in BM! Welcome!

It's really a beautiful model of this first flying boat with a metal hull. Unfortunately, it was apparently so underpowered (initially a mere 16 effective hp in total!) that it only managed to take off the first time when the weather was dominated by an extreme high pressure, and with the pilot dressed as lightly as possible! 😉

However, it was the first step for Short and the S.1 was a trailblazer, perhaps not in performance but by proving that metal hulls were viable and proved resistant to corrosion.

Magnificent modelling!

Kind regards,

Joachim

A very well assembled and painted kit of a most unusual airplane. It's a wonderful way to introduce your modeling skills.

Well indeed, you've set a high standard for your first contribution to BM. I also confess I've never heard of the type.

I certainly look forward to seeing your other models.

Like much of the obscure limited edition Avis-AModel- kits I’ve never seen this built

That's a very nice job @Octávio Mântua but the consensus is that it was overall alumnium dope in colour.

Hello all,

Thank you very much for all of your kind words.

As to the paint scheme it does differ from Avis instructions and all the builds I had seen until the moment I found this russian build:

http://scalemodels.ru/articles/14279-AviS-1-72-Short-S-1-Cockle.html?fbclid=IwAR3nSoo8o8L8hA-QV94ODXap0XSrnPM9WClFV2xnveRt1C_RSw0veg6bckI

After seeing this build the model seemed to be much more interesting.

Something that had always bothered me was why did the fuselage registration have to have such a big white background. The more I compared with other period aircraft it seemed to make sense a blue fuselage.

But as always this is not a consensus interpretation, so consider this a "what if build" 😃

Best regards,

Octávio

That's beautiful - what paint did you use for the blue?

Hi,

I made various mixes of blue and i ended up in using the following mix:

Tamiya X14* 5 + Tamiya X4 * 2 + Tamiya white * 2

In terms of painting, I first applied the above formula, then I applied another coat withe the same mix except for the white and finaly I applied a final coat with the initial mix.

Best regards,

Octávio
