28ZComeback
Hello all, I was wondering if anyone has a photo or other reference of a Royal Hellenic Spitfire XVI with a typical bomb or rocket load? I know I’ve seen a Greek Spitfire 16, with two 250 lbs bombs. Thank you in advance for your interest.
old_tonto
I did quite a lot of research on this subject a few years back when I was working on my Spitfire project. Unfortunately I can't find my notes at the moment but I do recall that rockets were popular during the civil war particularly when trying to attack communist insurgents hiding in caves up in the mountains. They often carried drop tanks too. Image here
Graham Boak
I suspect these drop tanks were ex-USAAF P-51 tanks filled with napalm. The Spitfire Mk.XVI was not plumbed for external tanks under the wings, and I don't see why the RHAF would need to have bothered. re-engineering the aircraft. 1
old_tonto
That would make sense Graham, the Mk XVI more than enough range for the Greeks.
