Mirage F1EDA Qatar Air Force

Jabba

Recommended Posts

For this GB I will be using one of Special Hobbys Simple Kit (similar to Eduard Overtrees) Mirage F1s to make an aircraft operated by the Qatar Air Force during the Gulf War of 1991. I will be using decals from FFSMC productions to accomplish this.

The kit.

Wow, great!

In 1/72 you should not have an issue with the loadout either.

As far as I understand it, common load out would be Magic III, 2 tanks, bombs on centerline an Sycomor and Remora pods.

That is what I am looking at, just need to find the stuff. I think that I have it all aprt from the bomb carrier under the fuselage, but Air-Graphics do one which I will order tonight.

I have made a start with this one, in that the inners of the fuselage have been made up and fitted to one half. I have also glued the wing halves together remembering from the last time I made this kit to rub down the inside of the lower part. These have since been filled. I have also included some pictures of the extra weaponary that I have found stashed away or bought.

I got the fuselage together and filled this in. I have also glued the nose cone and done a trial fit with the rest of the fuselage. Unfortunately this is not a good fit (As I seem to remember from the lsat build) and will need some fettling to get it to fit reasonably.

How are the MER and bombs looking? I bought some meteors from Air Graphics a while back and then when they arrived promptly went and bought Hasegawa's set instead... But given what else they carry (and, more importantly, others don't) I'm wanting to hope that those may not have been very representative of their usual quality.

Here is a photo of the stuff. In my opinion they do not look that bad.

After a fair bit of scraping and cutting of plastic I got the nose parts to fit. It was not brilliant, but it was the best that I was going to get. I have also fitted the other intake and then filled and sanded down these areas. I have also fitted the main U/C doors as I know from a previous build that the U/C legs can be fitted towards the end of the build after painting. The fit yeat agin is ot that brilliant hence the filler. I have done a trial fit of the fin and both wings which seem to be good at the moment. So it will be a sanding down of the U/C doors before I finally fit these. I also know that a panel line just in front of where the windscreen fits is 1mm too far back, but I am not going to bother rescribing this, as the last time it was too much for what it was worth in the end.

I have now glued the wings and fin to the fuselage. It was a good job hat I had not done this earlier as a quick double check before I did made me realise that I had cut the wrong fin from the sprues. So now the correct one is now fitted. I have also fitted the rear underfuselage strakes and all of these have been filled. I will run some  paint over the wing join to check that all is correct here, especially as I have used Perfect filler, which I have found out does not like water when sanding down. I also have to fill in some of the panel lines behind the cockpit and the Qatari aircraft have another AV bay in this area, which will require rescribing.

Yes, the fact that it can be cleaned up with water is one of its strengths, but it can also be an annoying weakness!

PPP has particular uses and, as you say, is water soluble. I use it only for very narrow gaps, applying filler, allowing a short drying period and removal with a cotton bud. It is very good around canopies. When wet it does get everywhere so care is needed. It doesn’t really sand well. I was pessimistic when I first used it but I am now a convert, using it within my mix of other filling materials such as Squadron White and dissolved sprue (Gloop) :). I use the latter when strength is required.

I used to use Squadron Green, but they changed the formula of this which I did not like and have been trying to find some of the white stuff with no luck and probably never now that they have gone out of business.

Anyhow I have sorted out the wing joints and I have fitted the sensors and aerials to the Fwd Fuselage. Normally I would leave these off until near the end of the build, but as they have a smalish plastic circular base that fits into a recess it was better to fit them now. So once I have got the U/C bays painted and front canopy I will start with the camo scheme. One thing that I forgot to mention is the the intake bullet on the port side is truncated, but I am leaving it this way as I cannot think ofa way to fix it.

I was lucky to grab a new tube a short while back. I need to make it last!

That is nice work on this one :)

I used to use the Squadron for years, switched to Tamiya fine white primer, smaller tube but it lasts quite awhile for me.
