Never been to Orkney but have visited Shetland , beautiful in its own way but as has been said bleak.

 

Can only imagine what it must have been like to man these coastal fortifications in all weathers (and up there weather takes on its own special meaning) 24/7 waiting and wondering who was going to see who first.
