Flying Leathernecks/Eyes in the Sky...1/48 Grumman F4F-3P Wildcat, VMO-251, USMC

Recommended Posts

Decided to finally build a replacement for the old Tamiya model my dad built years ago and which doesn´t exist anymore.

Gonna do a slightly different Wildcat. A bunch of USMC F4F were converted to foto recon planes by removing the tank behind the pilot and adding a camera. Due to the decreased range the planes were replaced with F4F-7P after some time. In 1943 the unit transitioned to Corsairs and was transformed into a fighter unit, VMF-251.

Gonna use the Hobby Boss kit with Super Scale decals

I remember a film called Flying Leathernecks when I was a boy. I've just watched the trailer on IMDB - jeez, it's corny. I expect you're too young to remember those films where John Wayne won the war single handed!

I'll be interested to watch this develop.

Yes, too young to see them in cinema back then but I´ve seen a bunch of his films on TV. You´re right, nowadays these movies are often cheesy 😄

started the build by painting the interior

John Wayne was a superman! He won the West single handed and he won WW2 single handed :) Great actor and great movies, even though some are so cheesy they go right through awful and out the other side!!! If you think Flying Leathernecks is cheesy you need to watch Flying Tigers! :D

Great start on the build - I didn't realise there were PR Wildcats. Need to find more info, as PR aircraft are a particular interest.

Looking forward to seeing your next instalment.

Cheers,

Mark

Sure, John Wayne movies with Wildcats, but who can remember the John Wayne movie with Brewster Buffalos?

And lest I commit thread abuse, there is a mystery around the PR variant of the Wildcat, the F4F-7.  No armament, camera centrally mounted, extra fuel for exceptional range and no armor.  Either 20 or 21 completed, possibly served with VMO-251.  Very nebulous airplane.

PS - tracked down a photo alleged to be a pranged F4F-7P, 251-MO-9.  Stars in six locations, no red dot.  No indication of the unit emblem, although the photo is from the starboard side. So there is another color scheme option.
