Decals - I will be doing an aircraft from VP 40 - The decal sheet looks like it's seen better days, so hopefully

no issues with them

As usual, I always (where possible) like to build my models to have a Kiwi Connection 🇳🇿, and I can say

VP 40 certainly has a Kiwi connection, and especially with the mighty Marlin - Stay tuned :D

Thanks for looking in, see you at the Kick off tomorrow

Great choice Alan, these are fantastic looking aircraft.

Looking forward to seeing what you can do with this classic kit.

Thanks Craig,

I haven't quite decided what I'll do with that cavernous interior, as there

is only the cockpit/flight deck in the kit ^_^

I wouldn't have thought that very much would be visible when the fuselage halves are joined together.

Having built this kit, I can confirm that not much is visible  once it's closed up.

Hi Craig,

I really just want to break up the "See Through" effect that happens when you have

a large expanse inside the model with light coming in- Sunderland model is another good example.

Having been in side a Sunderland (Photos below), it can be quite light/ dark depending on lighting.

Not planning on doing a full interior (No real photos of whole interior) :)

Hi Craig,

Maybe Dennis is just surprised I'm not doing a Sunderland or RNZAF Subject :D

That made my day :D

Though you did say your Marlin might have a Kiwi connection.

Hi Craig,

The Kiwi connection is two fold, one more direct than the other

VP-40 was Stationed in the Philippines mid-dish 1960's, and RNZAF 5 Squadron

along with the RAAF, were part of a SEATO (South East Asia Treaty Organization)

Exercise there, which also involved my Dad (serving with 5 Sqn). These are some

photos from RNZAF Museum of a VP40 Marlin, 5 Sqn Sunderland and RAAF Neptune in

formation (direct Kiwi connection) We used to watch the slide shows my Dad would do, showing

his visit to the Philippines

(RNZAF Official - RNZAF Museum - Used with Permissions)

Around same time, a VP 40 detachment  was Stationed at Cam Ranh Bay- Vietnam, as in this photo - The USN Sea Plane tender

is USS Salisbury Sound (AV 13) (Photo from Wikipedia)

800px-USS_Salisbury_Soung_(AV-13)_with_V

Another USN Seaplane tender was also there in support of VP 40 was the USS Pine Island (AV-12) (Photo from Wikipedia)

USS_Pine_Island_(AV-12)_with_SP-5B_Cam_R

After VP-40 departed Vietnam for the ConUS, Pine Island sailed south to Australia/New Zealand for Celebrations of the Battle of

Coral Sea (see link below)

USS Pine Island Visits to Australia/New Zealand

She berthed at Ports Of Auckland after leaving Australia

This was the second time Pine Island visited New Zealand, she was here late 1940's on her way to the Antarctic

I have a model of Pine Island, building as she was in 1960's - Plan to have a VP 40 Marlin on her deck

Hope that's of interest

  • 1 month later...

Hi All,

Looking at the lat date I posted something, it's been a wee while....

In my defence, we have had a Level 4 lock down here in NZed, and with my job,

been some what busy and that's eaten into model bench time.

I also decided in my "Infinite Wisdom" to do the White/Sea Blue scheme

as in the Trio Formation above, to go with my RNZAF 5 Sqn Sunderland.

So I had to scour the net to find 1/72 USN Letters to make up the VP 40

"QE" lettering/numbers.

I managed to find a set (Techmod) through Hannants, and they are currently

winging their way here

Anyways enough of the weeping wailing and gnashing of teeth :D

Lets see where I'm at

As in my previous post, I don't plan to do a full interior, I did find a great

site which had great interior photos, but it's now gone (did save photos to

my computer)

Anyways I found these two sites which have some great internal/external photos

and great operational info.

Sub Hunting in SEA - Marlin

VP 40 Cruise Book 1965

So build photos

The interior is quite sparse, except the Cockpit, but looking at photos from the

first link above, you can see past the cockpit into the rear flight deck

Marlin Rear flight deck

Fuselage

9f76fdf7-a96b-4888-820d-0eea53603a60.jpg

The cockpit is quite basic

6ffd1d03-4644-4f64-adc7-446a2eb63d8e.jpg

The large oblong thing does exist, but is missing a throttle Quadrant at the rear as in this photo

link

Cockpit Throttle Quadrant

So I built one out of tubing and sheet styrene

45479307-fda0-4f27-8d9d-8f3ef0a549b4.jpg

The Pilots controls are taken from an old Airfix Sunderland kit and modified

Added some saw cuts to mount the throttles and levers

cca37bbb-c620-4118-ba57-26d2c13f7481.jpg

As you can see in the above photo also, there is a a rear section attached to the rear cockpit bulkhead

I built a rear section of the flight deck, starting by using my trusted gauge

cdb25f4d-daf2-4fd5-a484-ceaf0f82658e.jpg

Transferred that to some cardboard to make a template ( well a few actually), and when test fitted and

happy with actual size and fit, cut out from sheet styrene and added the decking and here we are

Test fitted into fuselage

a979756f-79ca-43e5-bafe-ee5c06fd763f.jpg

Added some strip styrene for support

3c164660-9d0a-4312-82a4-abd972481811.jpg

With cockpit sitting in place (looking through to rear flight deck)

63c1ad76-8e22-4136-973a-e00d19263c6a.jpg

I'm also looking at removing the moulded plastic and opening up the rear

observation dome

8a15f6bf-3170-4580-9db1-c4d6a03554ca.jpg

So, with that, I would like to post a slight warning about the tools we modellers

use and keep on our model benches without to much thought..............

It's very early Spring here in the Antipodes, so the Sun gets warmer and my

model room  has a lot of glass (which generally isn't an issue).

So ladies and Gentlemen, esteemed colleagues I present an Offender of the highest magnitude

(Magnification rather)

0a916804-3b24-4deb-9c3e-a169984b9743.jpg

Now when I began prepping my photos for this post I couldn't help but think of the words by the Late

Great Freddy Mercury

"Lazer beams that blow your mind"

So where am I going with this???

The said offender on the weekend, was sitting at the rear of my Marlin model box innocently waiting it's

next use............................. add some sunlight, me being busy, and you have this..........

"Lazer Beams" Yes - "Blew my mind"  YES  :wall:

75a531f2-2f7a-4304-83bb-7d80995ed27f.jpg

Not irreparable, but a pain none the less - the photos below show are a start

on repairs - you can see I have removed the plastic in preparation to add in

the observers floor/compartment

Well Thanks for looking in, hope you find some mirth in my innocent Sun powered

lazer beam (I did later, as did my family ^_^)

More soon

Regards

Alan

A magnifying glass in the sunny window? Who did you offend?

Well, it was a great start, you just need to get past this torment...

Yes, I thought that too, who/whom did I offend, but after looking

over the facts of how what, why and where, it all sank in (rather ruefully).

The thing is that the alligator clips come in great for painting small parts.

So it will have to live off the bench and come out when I need it.

With Summer only a couple of months away (when I really can work till

late in the evening) I really don't want a repeat :fraidnot:

I have plans to fix the rudder post, so we'll see how it all pans out

Thanks for looking in and your comments :D

I'm particularly glad to see that you're recapturing your youth by setting fire to your kits (or was that just me ;)?).

Hi Cliff,

Thanks for looking in and your comments. :D

Yes, me like most lads tried all manner of things with models in the

name of furthering knowledge :smartass: (usually old models I had been given that

someone didn't want anymore - the types that were more glue than plastic).

My favourite was using my mom's vacuum cleaner (on blow setting) with

a plastic bottle as my war head to blow up a Airfix  Matilda tank, the turret always

flew off with a satisfying thud

Oh yes - I'm so happy it did happen to somebody else (sorry!). The very same incident ruined the full rear fuselage when I built my Toryu (here) in 2010. All burned and twisted. I can't describe the pains it took to find a solution which in the end was another kit of this rare model, from which I cut off the respective section to repair the already finished fuselage. I didn't take pictures of the disaster then, because I thought my stupidity didn't merit a trophy.

Ever since I check the position of the lens before I leave my work bench - it's become a reflex almost.

Happy to see your mishap nearly repaired.  Cheers, Michael

Hi Michael,

Funnily enough when it happened, I did wonder if it had happened to anyone else.

Sorry to read about your model (really nice by the way, love the camouflage scheme).

If it had been Summer here with the sun higher in the sky the results may well have been catastrophic

Thank you for looking in and your kind words. - Like you I am now checking where the magnifying glass is when

I get up from my model bench

Great to see your Marlin underway Alan, and a good start it is too. Very nice job on the area behind the cockpit.

A pity about the damage caused by your home made laser but It looks like you have repairs well in hand.

Hi Craig

Thanks for looking in, bit more to do with the whole fight deck

My Home made laser, could have been worse, and gratefully the repairs

not too arduous to carry out.......

Hope to post more soon
