Very nice!

Canard  of make this an interesting looking design!

On the Revell 48th kit you can have them movable.... with the drawback of having them in the way all the time ,)

Thanks, they always look cool in black primer!

I did my best to tidy up some of the seams around the intakes and nose etc., and got the paint on. I must say, it makes a refreshing change painting an aircraft all one colour!

I then noticed that the fuel tanks and pylons, which I thought were completely done, actually have quite a few decals to go on. I had thought it strange at the time that there were no decals for them, but then spotted the instructions for decals for them were on a different page. Anyhow, while putting a gloss coat on the Rafale I also re-glossed the fuel tanks and pylons. Next up is a lot of very small decals to be done...

Small update. Got all the decals on the fuel tanks/pylons done. And have started on the decals on the airframe...

The Syhart decals are behaving very well thankfully, the only issue is just how tiny some of them are, but that's hardly Syhart's fault, and they should be lauded for making them as to scale as possible! I have a few more sessions at the bench before the decals will be done.

Thanks!

Very slow progress on this. Mainly 'cos I'm getting very little time at the bench, but also because when I do get there I'm just working on the decals. There are quite a few of them. For example, here's the instructions for the bottom of the aircraft...

resized_d1b76aba-9386-458b-bbbf-84e35bbc

There are 74 separate decals there, and most of them are very small! I'm getting there, but it's slow work.

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks! I try to add some sort of variation to the colour, especially single colour schemes.

Well, that took far too long (about 3 weeks, but mainly due to not being at the bench much), but I finally have all the decals/stencils done. All 240 of them. Yes, I counted, if I was going to do that many, I wanted to know *how* many! :) They all behaved themselves thankfully, and the stencils definitely add scale to the build. Here's how it looks...

I've just done the second gloss coat on the airframe, so next up is the panel wash.

The Decal Sheet also has masks to paint the anti-slip sections near the canopy. They have to be *very* matt, so while I haven't decided if I'm gonna do them or not, if I am I'll probably leave them until the very end of the build.

Well, I finally decided to do the anti-slip sections using the provided masks. And my indecision about them led to some issues!

Firstly I put on the masks themselves, which went down fine...

resized_92652dc1-94fd-4de0-8782-84513462

Then I put down some masking tape, to cover the surrounding area...

resized_37a5c738-5c2a-4849-99f3-5c97ca61

And then I sprayed a lighter version of the base colour, and took all the masks off...

It's possibly a *little* too light in colour but I don't mind that. Unfortunately, as careful as I was, some of the decals lifted with the tape/masks. That's where my indecision cost me, I should of course have painted them before I put decals down, but at that stage I hadn't decided if I was going to add them or not.

Anyhow, I was able to rescue/replace every decal bar one, so I'm going to see if I can get my hands on a replacement for that, or live without it being there.

Next up now is the panel line wash!

Got the panel wash done. It's not bad, a bit rougher than I'd like in places. I seem to struggle with getting a smooth paint finish when spraying into corners/concave curves, and the wash always makes that stand out. But the wash is helping the detail come out a bit too...

Next up is the matt coat, but I want to get the missing decal done first. So I might start looking at the Resin Catapult/Tractor, and see what's involved with them!

Well, the replacement Decal arrived (thanks @Dermo245!) and I should get that on this weekend.

But I've also started tidying up the resin for the catapult (only 3 parts) and the Desk Tractor. It took me a little while to figure out its assembly (well, the smaller parts anyhow) as the instructions aren't 100% clear, but once I have all the parts cleaned up, and some of the PE on, I'll put some primer and paint on them.

Making slow progress. Got the missing decal on...

For some reason the lighting on that pic is really weird, and the paint job looks almost two tone.

Started work on the deck tractor, adding some PE. Any bets on how long the four small semi-circular pieces on each corner will actually stay on for? :)

When I get the rest of the PE done, it'll be time to prime it.

Well, I've got a good bit of spraying done recently!

I got the deck tractor and catapult parts primed and painted. Here's how the deck tractor looks now...

resized_dcb07901-98c2-4088-aaff-d8b2da1d

It still needs varnish and deals, and looks a bit too clean as well! :)

I also got a matt coat on the airframe and other parts too. So I am getting there!

Next up is some decals on the catapult and deck tractor, and then weathering and matt varnish on them.

And then I get to stick all the remaining bits on!

Now I'm at this stage of the build...

resized_f2ce1314-9e87-47fb-bb2a-34230c1f

Lots of bits to be added! I've done some of them, the main undercarriage is proving awkward due to unclear instructions, but I found instructions for the Revell 1:48 kit online, and they're clearer.

I also have this weird problem with the Tractor, it's refusing to go matt in places and keeps on being gloss. Not sure what's caused that, some weird reaction between the paint and the gloss, but I'm working on it still, a shiny deck tractor just looks wrong, especially as it's only shiny in places.

Not long left with this now and it'll be done.

Thanks!

It's basically done now, I just need a couple of touch-ups and to take some proper pics!

Firstly, here's the weird issue with the Deck Tractor...

Some gentle sanding has sorted it enough to make it usable.

Here's the aircraft, pretty much finished...

And here's an idea of what it looks like with the Deck Tractor and Catapult on the base...

Once I have it properly finished I'll take some better photos...

Well, I finally got some decent pictures of it all.

I enjoyed this build, though it dragged on as I didn't get a lot of time at the bench at times, and also there were a lot of decals! But I do think the Rafale is a lovely aircraft, all curves, even if that meant getting them all to line up in plastic wasn't always successful! Thanks to everyone for their help and advice, and to @Wez and my fellow co-hosts for hosting this GB! Here are the pics, I'll put them up in the Gallery as well...
