1/48 Tamiya F-14a Tomcat

Recommended Posts

Hi All,  Please find my recently completed Tamiya 1/48 Tomcat.

This was an absolute joy to build.  Tamiya's engineering on this kit was spot on.

Extras included resin wheels, Photo etch for the cockpit and brassin seats. Also used a resin closed exhaust nozzle and a resin replacement for the beaver tail.

I didnt want to have an F-14 with a perfectly clean paint finish as that would not look right to my eyes.  I Tried to give it a weathered paint finish by painting the grey sections black, then used an AK paint mask to spray white splodge . then oversprayed this with the grey colour to get a weathered looking result.  THe white sections were primed with white primer, the Paint mask used to spray light grey splodges and then white sprayed over the top.

THe intake blanks and exhaust blanks were home made.  i did buy resin intake blanks, but they were made for the Hasegawa kit and were too short (and I ended up loosing one inside the tomcat body.  So I made my own and used the decals provided with the resin items to create the markings which are linked to the particular airframe (the VF number and aircraft number)   I think one the intake blanks is a trimmed down gunbay access panel from a corsair and the other was made from a 1/32 tempest gunbay cover.

Now thats an awesome finish.

Gonna nick your idea for the weathering, not sure it'll work with a hairy stick but my one is only the Revell F14-D, so no lose either way.

Thanks guys. I got the idea from a YouTube video. The flexible mask is really good and conforms to complex curves nicely.  They were a lot of fun to used (you don't have to tape it in place)

Rod - they are lovely kits!
