Eduard Hawker Tempest MkV series1

Recommended Posts

Having got a couple of things to the 'nearly finished' stage, I though I'd take a break from P51s and start what was always my favourite plane as a child, the Tempest.

I bought this when I visited Hannants recently. I saw it, and as modellers, you know the rest. It came home with me.

I've only recently taken up the hobby again and have been working on a couple of Revell kits that I bought a few years ago while living in WA. I'd never bought an Eduard kit before and I have to say that I've been quite blown away by the difference in quality. It's like I've been involved in a pub league up until now, and suddenly I'm in the Premier League.

Even the box art is so much better:

The instruction booklet a a glossy magazine, and informative.

The clear parts are well formed and very clear:

There's even a sheet of photo etched parts.

And the detailing on the fuselage and wings is absolutely superb.

If anything, I'd say the rivets on the fuselage look a little too pronounced.

There's not a hint of flash anywhere.

I'm going to enjoy this!

I just posted this in WW2, the videos lined are really well worth watching, as while the Eduard kit has a 'wow' factor, there are some issues in construction,  which if you know abut them, and potential fixes, will make the build a lot more enjoyable.

While an upgrade of the previous tooling, it has some issues, which are fixable if you know about them,   @Paul Budzik did a 3 part review of the kit on youtube, and Paul a few years back made a stunning 1/32 scratchbuild one, https://paulbudzik.com/models/tempest-page.html   so he knows a bit about Tempests ;)

well worth the time, especially for the wing details.

PS - This is part 4, on the series 2 kit

there are also reviews of the Tempest II by him now as well.

Thanks for posting these links, Troy. Knowing about the issues, I can look out for them and hopefully produce a decent model.

Paul Budzik's review is absolutely excellent!

  • 3 weeks later...

I've not had a chance to progress with this - hopefully that will change this week.

I have a question re the office floor.

This is an excerpt from the instructions:

As you can see, part E46 is supposed to painted grey green and silver. The grey green is no problem, but silver? This is presumably where the pilot would rest his feet, so aluminum perhaps. Anybody got any comments re this?

Lots of the Typpon cockpit was painted aluminium, but AFAIK, the Tempest was grey green with upper sidewalls in black.

this image from the pilts notes

shows the footboards in the same mid tone as the sides, so grey green.

@Chris Thomas may know more if he looks in.

here the IP, note throttle is in black

As for the cockpit floor: AFAIK this was not really there; it's a nod to buildability. So I'd keep that significantly darker than the rest, to imitate the deep shadow of looking into the wing structure below.
