A new aircraft from Sukhoi will be revealed at MAKS 2021. There are pictures showing a single engine twin tailed aircraft covered with a tarp being wheeled around

Air combat is going to be very tricky with all the combatants looking the same these days.  That could be an F-35 under that tarp :hmmm:

Could that be the south korean KAI KF-21?

The KAI KF-21 is twin-engined. Russian Tarpaulin-Jet is single-engined.

looks a lot like a F-35-"inspired" aircraft...

That's the thing.  Optimum radar-reduction is the same no matter what computer or design bureau it runs at.  It's the same reason all modern cars look a bit alike.  Aerodynamics  I suppose it's really just a choice of engines, crew number and whether you want low-observable from all angles like the F-35, or just while you're flying into the attack like the Su-57 Felon.

Rather interesting times! If everybody flies stealth jets... Will it be down to dogfights again? ;)

The Chinese J-31 also looks the same, but twin engined. It is even the same black as this cover :D

You punch the same parameters into a computer and you get the same result....

So you mean computers are right?

Or you mean that those ARE the same calculations?

I think the snag is that if you make similar compromise assumptions, the most believable or acceptable answers will look similar , at least to anyone who is part of a committee. Old style designers were more apt to go with their gut feel or their personal idiosyncratic engineering preferences.

There used to be a saying about IT kit - " no-one got fired for buying IBM".  In this case, if everyone else is producing shapes like this, that reassures the doubters.  A radical departure may be seen as more risky.

And I thought BVR tactics were down to advanced radar, missiles and systems. Now I realise that the major possible combatants have a protocol that as their aircraft are so ugly they will engage out of sight of the other

More seriously I reckon the guys are right in that when you design for the same problem you get the same shapes/ solutions. Of course a highly active government agency specialising in industrial espionage helps

Not one that you do a collection of models of because of the markings.

Teleport me back to the sixties and seventies please it was colourful then.

That and safety (both passenger and pedestrian) regulations don’t leave much wiggle room for the designer

A Russian near copy built using data stolen from Lockheed Martin perhaps?

Well if one discounts the lack of horizontal stabilisers, the sharply canted vertical stabs and the rather unusual Angel-Interceptor wrap around intake plus various sundry other details... I'm afraid I'm not seeing, just like an F-35.

To me it looks more like they've been having a peek at some of Gerry Anderson's designs and adapting them for stealth... :D

I admit I'm not convinced by a couple of details of the otherwise interesting drawings. I can see no evidence for the intakes at the roots of the taileron/stabilator or whatever you want to call those tail fins under the tarps. The main wrap around intake is also perhaps a bit speculative. It'll certainly be an interesting reveal!

Looks a bit like a cross between the F35 and the YF32. I wonder if they are looking for something a bit cheaper than the Su57
