Humbrol enamel primer

I'm going to make a start on humbrol enamel that I've not used in a very long while. I've read that some use a Primer and some don't. 

If it's best practice what should I be using? 

Humbrol do an enamel grey Primer in a small pot.

Halfords own brand car primer and humbroll enamels thinned with standard celulose thinners .Fool proof just stinks a bit so spray outdoors if possible.

Humbrol primer works well by brush or airbrush. Thin with naptha/naphtha (lighter fluid) and you’ll get a less smelly result than with cellulose thinners. It will also dry far quicker.

 

Be prepared for two or three coats, though.

From what I've heard and read, the thinners from Colourcoats (Sovereign Hobbies) are supposed to be very good, and naphtha based. The owner is @Jamie @ Sovereign Hobbies and will tell you a bit more about it.
