Which of these modelling traits do we share?

Going to the stash, pulling out a kit and examining all the sprues/ decals / etc despite no intention of building it either now or the immediate future.

Overlooking something in the stash because the decals look like a pain.

Overlooking something in the stash only because of no idea what colour to paint it.

Overlooking something in the stash because that kit's manufacturer makes things that are a pain to build.

Overlooking something in the stash as it'll clearly take 5X the work of what you have just selected instead.

Overlooking what is/are clearly the best kit(s) in the stash for no actual good reason and building something else instead.

Building something you've recently bought whilst older kits that live in the stash, stay in the stash.

Your stash has certain storage areas and once a kit goes into those, it'll never emerge.

Buying more than one of the exact same kit.

Being entirely bored of "Semi Gloss Black".

Wishing Belkits would hurry up or at least give some idea of release dates.

Wondering why Tamiya make car kits less frequently than they used to.

Wondering why Tamiya stopped making rally car kits.

Browsing 1999.co.jp excessively, especially the future months release section.

Looking on ebay most days because it's lockdown and what else can you do?

Wondering what it'll take to convert road car kit X to a race car, or race car kit Y to a road car.

The above lists sums up 99.99% of modellers what ever subject they model.

Guilty as charged.

Certainly these ones from your list ring true.  I don't generally build racing or rally cars so I don't usually have to worry about complicated decals (thank goodness).

I'm trying to think of any others e.g. making a start on a kit only to put it aside and start (and finish) something else instead.

Most definitely, all of those!

And expanding on that;

Wondering why Tamiya have recently introduced a nice Mk2 Escort in 1/10 scale, but not in the 'proper' model car scale?!

(yes, I know it's probably something to do with 'money'....!!)

I'm probably more consistently guilty of this than any of the others.

In my youth, whenever I got something new, I always ended up taking it apart.

Found it fascinating to see how things were made and how they worked.

May explain all the partially built kits🙄

"Being entirely bored of "Semi Gloss Black." There's a Japanese blogger who talks about mixing various blacks and browns to create some variety of semi-gloss black and without fail I completely forget his suggestion until after I've laid down a nice smooth semi-glossy coat of semi-gloss black on whatever I'm working on.

Having a drawer of doom, full of about 15- 20 half done kits. All of them are fabulous of course! Then build and complete something I bought last month totally ignoring said draw of doom........

Fondling a new kit then putting it away for who knows how long. Already listed I know, and looking up reference material and shoving that back as well..Chris.

Well, you did ask ;)

Actually, I'm surprised at how few of those traits I have - does that make me not a proper modeller???

Probably a more decisive one!

That RS200 is going to sell a lot whenever it comes out. I'll be getting one for certain.

You know what my biggest problem is, with regards to model making...? What the hell do I do with them once they're built?

You see, there's me and Mrs Anteater (#notactuallymarried) and that's it. If I'm the last one left it'll be left to the council to force entry and chuck everything in a skip... I veer between everything being ultimately futile and genuinely not caring, because if it keeps me occupied, so be it. I think unearthing a load of stuff from my youth made me consider that I'll probably not see the kits I'm building now 30 years on... How gloomy, but probably realistic...

I'd like to think I'm competent but nothing I build is award winning museum-standard, so I have no misplaced expectation of an Anteater wing of the National Model Making Museum. But I am acutely aware that nobody else really cares, and quite rightly so. I'm ok with that, but it means I'm not comfortable with building up a stash of stuff I would never get round to building. It seems better to let someone else have the chance to build up a kit than let it sit on my shelf (although the more I learn, the more it seems likely that 98% of kits hoarded by other people will remain in stash-form...). We all crash into the Sun in 7.5 billion years so there's no point letting things drift.

So that's my model making trait. But then I'm self centered enough to believe the world revolves around me and you're all a construct of my sub-conscious. Or at least, I hope you all are because if this is reality we've all got major problems...

Peace and love.

I have this exact same situation (aside from being actually married, and to Mrs Galaxyg). I have some 99 cars built now, and about 6 planes. The unbuilt stash is about 70 kits (mostly cars, some aircraft) and will expand by another 40 or so more (at the very least) over the next 10 years. Given my build rate of about 1 kit per month, then by the time I'm 60 I'll have 200+ built kits to somehow store and / or display. Once built then unless sold, they're part of your life forever.  There's only so much room in the cabinet, and it's currently full.  And there's even less room on the front row, although I do rotate them. So the question from above repeats "What the hell do I do with them once they're built? " and as a follow on "What the hell becomes of all my efforts, once I'm dead?"  Existential..

Perhaps I should just put a note in the display cabinets once I'm over 70 (assuming that happens)... "put these one ebay, you'll get more than binning them" to whomever finds them.

Well, that got dark.

not just with cars.

I keep telling my 16 year-old daughter " these models will be worth something for you someday  " . She says " who'll want them  ? " .....

The same applies to my near full collection of Rallycourse and Rothmans / Audi Sport  /  Pirelli rally annuals .

The youth of today and all that  !!

Glad I've stirred up some existential trauma, bwa ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha...

Thankfully I have nobody to leave my worthless rubbish to, but in the process of moving to a new International Headquarters Building I have been forced to confront my specialist magazine collection (not that kind). A full collection of Rallycourse / R-A-P annuals would be pure gold, and I'm keeping all my period car mags and Autosports. But I have too many old issues of millennium-era Motorsport News and far too many back issues of MiniWorld magazine (don't ask...). In fact, if anyone wants the latter, PM me. They're not free but they won't be, like, expensive or anything...

#Thread drift

Edit to say I must get round to listing my 30 year old completed kits, which are probably highly valuable for parts or resto projects. Not.

Me too!

One lot of magazines I do regret disposing of was my pile of 1970's Cars and Car Conversions - loved that mag.!

Not necessarily - there's a fair few of mine helping pollute the planet under tons of landfill.....!!

When ever this crosses my mind, I immediately tell myself... "who cares...?!" (may be selfish, but, hey, who cares....?! :) )

In that case I'd better get a wriggle on - should finish most of the stash by then (provided, of course, that I don't buy anything else ...).

  • 2 weeks later...

I would add my own trait of aquiring the same kit multiple times because I keep raiding it for the same set of Torque Thrust mag wheels (or some other “favorite part”…). I have four AMT ‘62 Chevy Bel Air kits in the stash all without the cool mags that I would want to use on them. Solution? Order more ‘62 Bel Air kits for “only those will do” replacement mag wheels! Someday after I’ve passed on there will be an eBay auction consisting of a pile of AMT ‘62 Bel Air kits all without those wonderful Torque Thrust mag wheels….
