S.S. Jeremiah O'Brien Liberty Ship by Trumpeter 1/350

Recommended Posts

Good Morning or whatever time of day it is where you are.

Well, I'm back from a sometimes sunny Cornwall and ready to start some serious building on this ship.

Also, the guns have arrived from Starling Models, I have to say they are very good and should do the build proud.

Today, I've been mostly making winches.

From component parts to ten if the little devils.

Will be looking into how much, or how little cable to add to them.

And then just as a change, I've assembled the 5" gun. Nice bit of 3D printing by Black Cat Models.

So, today I've mostly been bending brass, I'm so glad I splashed out on the rolling jig, I could never have got the curves on the gun buckets without it. (luckily one of the rollers was EXACTLY the same diameter, whose a luck boy then ?)

I'll start with the component parts for the 20mm Oerlikon buckets, and then a bit of bending later there we have 'em. I popped in a gun just to see what they looked like, not half bad. They do look better with a coat of grey paint.

So far, I'm quite pleased with the progress, I think I'm getting better at this model building lark.

I really shouldn't have said that......

The rough surface is because of the primer and initially I thought 'that's crap'. But I've since looked at the real ships gun buckets and to be honest, they've got a pretty crappy finish too. At least I think so. In real size it doesn't look as bad.

Just need to fix a ladder to them, but that is a WAY off. If I put it on now, I'm guaranteed to bend it.

And finally, the hull. And d'you know what, I really think the plating will look quite good , just needs a bit of a rub down. @beefy66 you Sir are a genius.:worthy:

Greetings, fellow shipwrights.

I've started to add deck fittings, so here are the winches and the two forward Oerlikon gun tubs. I'm going to have to research the winches to see what, if any, cable was attached to them. Without it, I think they'll look a bit bare. Actually, thinking about it, I imagine there will be cable from them to the derricks for lifting cargo from the holds, more internet research beckons.

And that leads to another thought, perhaps a future build should have the hatches open, and cargo being lifted out.

@beefy66 @robgizlu How about it chaps ? Right up your street, I reckon.

That would be a great D-Day Landing diorama, Hmmm.:hmmm:

But I'm getting a bit carried away here and that is probably a bit over my skill set. But...........

p?i=d1f9fadfd9e3471db562c997fce57bfa

I've added a bit of rust to the gun tub floors.

p?i=43fd671920529d17f7ad080c28737e60

The hull plating is ok, but perhaps the plates are too big ?

Can't do anything about it now, but have made mental note for next time. It certainly is a clever way to represent them on a smooth hull.

But they do at least show under the grey paint, I've also added a bit of rust. It's ok, but I'm not that happy with it. Changes could occur later.

p?i=009e6f33b5c2928179046f15502b0903

The next stage of this build are the hatch covers.

After a bit on internet searching, I found a description of them from a crew member, who described them as being wooden planks covered in a canvas tarp, the colour of the tarp could be a shade of green, so that's what I've done. And I have added a bit of dry brushing to give the impression of fading.

p?i=8f218a6c2ba7c4225bbc2c04a42d44ab

When straight from the box, these covers had their straps shown as thick ribs, these I have removed, so as to attach the  much finer PE straps with their central buckle, also the PE includes the sides, to which these straps attach, as you can see below.

As you can see, I've left the buckle unpainted, I think this is a mistake as everything shiny was painted grey, so that is what I'll do. But I might use a slightly different shade to try to highlight them. And then probably a dab of rust ?

p?i=41f05a6a1510a14ce4aa724e1779f976

Right. That's me lot, just got to paint, trim and fit 35 more straps.

See you all soon.

That's today finished, all hatches have had their straps fitted, I've dry fitted the covers.

I must turn my attention to where to site Bobs Buckles, in readiness for the rigging. Which means more internet searching.

Cheers Jerry.

Thanks for the link.

A bit spooky :ghost: to see my own build being linked to on another forum, that’s a first for me.
He certainly has a different approach to building, I can’t help but think he might struggle with some of the painting, later on. We shall see.

But as is often said, ‘there is no right way, just your way’ and if the builder is pleased with the result, then that is all that matters.

Anyway, enough chatter, I probably have more brass to bend.

Some of the modellers I follow on YouTube add all the photo etch, including the likes of the deck railings, prior to painting and then mask as they go.  One guy uses blutack for masking then rips it all off at the end and none of his PE ever falls off or gets damaged, I don't know how he does it...

I’ve seen the same, but masking for me it creates work. And I can not always guarantee the masking medium, whether it be tape, blutack, or liquid actually works. I seem to always have to touch up other surfaces. Each to there own.
And once PE is in place, I don’t dare touch it.

Any ideas what colour the life rings would have been in 1944 ? I know what they are now, red or orange. But would they have been like this, then ?

I can’t find any war time photos that show this, even black and white photos might help.

Nice work on this! :clap2:

As for life rings, they could be orange (red?), gray, or white. I have photos of US vessels showing all three colors. The orange/red is confirmed in contemporaneous color photos.  White is unequivocal in monochrome photos. Gray matching the hull is well shown in monochrome.

If you do have the hatches open, remember one boom is arrange to lower the cargo onto the pier/barge/other, the other is slightly outboard of the hatch on the opposite site from the unloading site. With the hook attached to cables from each boom, there's a full range of athwartship motion. The actual hatch covers are 5ft x 2.5ft, made of planks with steel bands around each end, with handles at 2 diagonal corners to lift them.

@dnl42 thanks for that, the colours are as I thought, I’ll probably settle on white. The hatches are staying firmly shut. But I will try the rig the booms as much as I can, I think they’ll look a bit bare without some sort of cable attached to them.

It's a bit hot here, so work has been a bit slow. So, I've finished the masts, or I think more accurately they are called King Posts (correct me if I'm wrong).

Anyway they were a right fiddle, with lots of brass, but once sprayed they should look ok.

Those bits that sticking out and look like wheels are, I think, blocks for the cables which attach to the crane arms. So when I come to rig said arms, these little wheels will be squeezed closed over the cables. I hope.

Next are the deck houses that the King Posts (?) sit on.

That's it for now, off to drink cold wine in the shade.

Be back soon.

Same for me.  Never managed to successfully mask PE.  Always either comes away or more likely bends when I lift the masking off.  I really don't understand how other people manage successfully to do it.

this is taking shape nicely jon . love your PE work . how far are going to weather her ?

I’ve put a bit of rust on the hull and will do the same to the superstructure, not sure how much. Hopefully I’ll know when to stop.

Good Morning. Hot here, so not the best weather for building tiny components.

I don't think I have EVER bend and shaped SSSSOOOO much brass on a model before. Sometimes I wish I'd never started, but it is sort of satisfying in a strange way.

I also don't think I've put so much brass onto such a small part. This bridge/superstructure only measures 2"x3". And there are still many pieces to fit yet and my favourite .......

RAILINGS .

It will look infinitely better when it's painted. But not until all the brass is fitted.

So, a few more piccy's.
