Tim Moff Posted June 26, 2021 Share Posted June 26, 2021 (edited) More of a placeholder as I’m finishing off my Canberra SC9 over at the unarmed GB as I’m off to Tokyo 8 July - 10 Aug so need to get that over the line… Thought I’d have a bash with this - have a couple of Hasegawa line kits in the stash but felt like doing something different … This is a really old tool reboxed down the line … Challenges will be white paint, raised panel lines and of course the large decals …. Will pop a Canberra pilot in (unless anyone has any modern USAF pilots sat in the spares box never to be used !) and see how it goes…Kit has loads of ejection pins and flash to sort but seems quite a basic build parts wise … Have some Mr Paint in all 3 colours for where the insignia red and blue are needed … How do you guys prime for white ? I just used a white rattle can on the Canberra - is it better with black over the white plastic or maybe Halfords grey ? or stick with the white? It's a great scheme and who knows by the end of this GB we may actually have the whole group...... just make sure we have all the right numbers! White plastic is a pain to prime, I now use only lacquer paints now (MRP or AK Real Color), so for primer I've found using Tamiya acrylics, either Flat White or their Sky Grey XF-19. It give a really good basic for the lacquer paint. Seeing the plastic is white this time and the scheme lightest colour is white, I'd be tempted to go with the lightest grey they do or you could try Gunze Mr Hobby ( I haven't tried but it should work just as nicely), again with a very pale grey? I think using white would make the top coat of white appear a bit transparent like, where the grey would make it more solid like........if you get my meaning. Good luck over in Tokyo.....gosh I wish I could head bak that way, for the last2 years we've meant to be going back there....gosh knows when we'll be allowed back! 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Cheers Rich - yep I’ve been doing the lacquers and occasional Tamiya acrylic mixed with lacquer thinners for a while as well. good point on the grey - I reckon I will use the Mr Paint white primer I have with a couple of drops of black mr paint primer to give me an off white / grey base to put the insignia white over. Tokyo 20 will no doubt be a bit weird and restrictive olympics but I shall have to roll with it - if i get a chance I may look for a few Tamiya/Zoukei-Mura bargain prices compared to U.K. ! 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Tokyo has some nice model shops but the best ones I found were in Kyoto (ZM's home) and in Osaka, one place their specialises in rare secondhand stuff!! Tim Moff Posted July 3, 2021 Author Share Posted July 3, 2021 Made a bit of a start the insignia white is a bit different - have primed the area around where the intake and lower fuselage join and will add the white before I join them as it’s an area hard to get to. Sorry for the late reply but I lke Mr Surfacer (white) to prime for white. would be my preference. It is super smooth and thin, dries in about 15 mins (in Oz anyway) and has a satin finish. trickyrich Posted July 5, 2021 Share Posted July 5, 2021 I have been reading elsewhere about other people having issues with MRP-099 White. It seems there's a difference in batches with the newer one (they had 2 different bottles, old & new) having a slightly yellow tint to it when compared to the older stuff. I know FS.17875 is not a true pure white and is meant to have a very slight tint (not sure which way....grey??), but looking at that photo I would have gone towards a pure gloss white maybe? 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

A bit of a weird experience at Tokyo 20, with the restrictions etc but great to see the athletes performing. Then home to some time off - I thought - to then dip in and out of work with the crisis in Afghanistan…. Nice to take some time out in the quiet garage and catch up with the Viper… Apologies long photo heavy post ! Cracked on with the build bit of filling needed with the fin join got on with the canopy tint - the Raptor build gave me a bit more confidence! Built up and painted the exhaust nozzle .. but of exhaust, titanium, blue etc Masked up and glued on I thought the kit was an F-16A - turned out it’s a Block 32 C model as it has a blade antenna on the fin edge, unbulged rear gear doors and no IFF on the upper nose …. Masked up the glass Got it on got the black frame inner painted time to prime ! used Mr Paint white primer with a few drops of black primer to make it a light grey so I could at least see it go on the white plastic …. the decals will be a challenge- not sure how good they will be and there’s a lot of raised lines and bumps… display aircraft models can look a bit toy like, which is fine but I like to try to weather things a bit and I found this …. classic ‘no crew chief would ever let a Thunderbird get dirty ‘ picture 🤣 not sure why? Out of season maybe ? anyway - I’m gonna put down a bit of panel line shading in nato black and pre-shade other areas … before sticking some Mr Color white over the top - I removed the ventral stabs having seen an old review saying you can’t put decals on if they are fitted ! some areas then need the red and blue paint on to cover areas not covered by decals … moving on toward the finish line! 3 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Tim Moff Posted August 31, 2021 Author Share Posted August 31, 2021 Used NATO Black to pre-shade and then got the mr paint white on over the top, building up layers slowly … thoughts ? Have to get some gloss over the top. I may need to use for Floreys dark dirt wash once decals on … need to put blue on the undercarriage doors and a bit of red on the tail/nose areas, then some X22 gloss before the decals - which I’m sure will be a challenge! 3 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Tim Moff Posted September 2, 2021 Author Share Posted September 2, 2021 (edited) Decals started - bit more painting once I’d looked at the decals - suspect a bit more painting post decals as well …. for old decals they seem to be going on well - having some probs getting the blue nose stripe to hunker down over the lumps on the chin … tried micro set and then Mr Softer …. Yes theres some areas they tell you to paint before, others they don't that will need to be hand painted or airbrushed....think I will gloss first.....some areas decals still won't completely settle down around bumps.... Some areas will need brush painting or very careful airbrushing where there are gaps, but I am generally happy....looking back I could have maybe left a bit more of the preshading to come through, with gloss coats its not so obvious. As panel lines are raised I will ned to use a floreys type wash rather than the Tamiya panel line accent I like. Nearly there, will give the decals more treatment over the weekend, then bang on some X22/MLT clear to seal it all - then I plan to put the blue and red touch up paint on, do the chin lights etc, some dirty wash in areas as per the ref pic... Then a mix of gloss with a touch of matt to finish off? Did think about making some pitots etc that are missing but will probably leave as is tbh...just eyeing the Phantom GB....🤪 3 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Gloss with a touch of matt would work, though some of the Semi-glosses can be quite shiny.
