MIG 31 BM / BSM

Hallo

Now I started today with my MIG 31.

To tell the story from the beginning: I was on a Su-25 UB from KP.

The model was finished so far just before spraying.

When I installed the cockpit glass I had to notice, that the complete cockpit was about 2 to 3 mm too far aft.

The windshield for the rear cockpit was impossible to install.

Since the windows are opening to the right, they have to be in a proper position.

I had to stop it. My 3rd model I stopped after 30 years.

Than I wanted to go on with the Jaguar from Kitty Hawk. But not at all after this frustration.

This kit of the MIG 31 from AMK is a joy.

I cannot remember having worked on such a wonderful kit.

Two pins from the nose gear were off.

So I replaced it with 1mm brass rod.

As you see, the center box including main wing is done.

The engine: Here I had a resin engine, bit I did not use it, because of unknown troubles of alignment ahead at the very rear end.

I did not want to repeat a resin mis-alignment as on the Su-25!

All you see is my doing from after breakfast until now approx.. 15.00.

Happy modelling

I have this AMK kit in my stash but not opened the box yet. I have started to build four 1:72 Condor Mig-31BM couple of years ago but no progress since long time. I had to spend a lot of effort and time to correct misaligned mold defects. I also have couple of 1:72 Revell Mig-31 kit which is nicely detailed and has superb decals. Maybe I can get my motivation back during your build and complete them 🙂

Hallo

Today I added Quinta Studio decals to my cockpit.

I prepared the surfaces, smoothed them and grinded them down.

Sprayed all in proper color. Gunze C color.

Some of the decals were already loose, the others I got off with warm water as usually for decals.

Get access water of with a cloth.

Lay it on a glass plate for rest to get them dry.

You have any time you need before placing them on the kit part.

No hurry!

I used PVA glue. Easy to do.

Easy to remove access glue.

In comparison with Eduard etched parts and CA glue, this Quinta works without stress.

And you do not have to fight against the stiffness of etched parts.

Hallo

Today I had to notice that this kit has a major error!

The nose gear! It is too long.

The instruction tell you honestly nothing about it.

The AMK may have thought something, but did not at all explain it in the instruction.

We have two WIPs from this model, every modeler refrained from mentioning this issue.

So I went into this trap. I noticed a parallel issue on an other model too.

I really ask you firmly to speak out clearly in WIPs, if there are troubles.

I understand a WIP as a guideline for fellows and not at all as an advertise.

I got along.

Cutting and metal pin. No joy.  Frustration.

Happy modelling

I am afraid that you have put up the nose gear wrong. One should put the lower part of nose strut into one of the upper tube halves before closing the upper tube. I had made the same mistake with my build, only had to remove the lower part and replace it in the right position.

Hope the rest of your build goes smoothly!

Oh yes. The instruction is concerning this matter in vain. The angle as shown makes all informations unvisible. Even under glass I could not see anything.

So, never trust an instruction.

The instruction is concerning the wheelbay heavily to improove. Many items can be glued later on. I did so.

The antenna at the side bottopm of the intake also.

Hallo

Here is another small step.

Against the odds of the lack of information in the building instructions.

And contrary to the absolutely meaningless building reports.

To remark: The interior cockpit frame and correkt masking is not easy.

The big mirror for the back seater is noce.

To work with Quintas decals for the ejection seat is highly recomended.

Care must be taken for the main gear wheels. To put the right one in the right position.

Concerning the brake.

My model will be the model of a real real MIG-31.

The cover by Duke Hawkins shows the blue 12.

In the next few days I'll be spraying the airframe.

Happy modelling

Hallo

As you may see now, the main paint job is done.

Detail work with the brush is ahead.

Even little spraying still ahead.

All parts are done and painted.

For detail work I assume it will take me this weekend, at least tomorrow.

The stencils ahead from Begemot are really a lot.

I asume it will take me one week long to place them all!

The stencils from the kit vs. Begemot, there is just an extremely big difference in detail and number.

Well, so will see how it will work out.

Hallo

Now my MIG 31 is finished. Some pictures show you the nozzle.

Here I used Tamiya weathering sets, mostly D to get the colors right.

The missiles were quite good.

Happy modelling
