1/48 Academy MiG-29A, Luftwaffe

An old kit, but far better than I expected.

Yes, there are i couple of errors, but the basic shapes are OK, and the kit was not that bad. I replaced the nose cone and seat, but the rest is mostly OOB.

Decals are from my spares box, mostly from Revell's Tornado. Not perfect, but good enough for this build.

I painted it with the excellent Mr. Paint colours. The nose cone weathering was achieved through the hairspray method and Gunze paint.

Fit was not perfect. Especially the engine nacelles and a stupid part just behind the nose, the lower part of the body including the gun. But that was nothing that not could be solved with a little sanding and some violence. :D Almost no putty was used.

Of course, the GWH Fulcrum is far better. But this one is cheaper and simple to build. Cockpit is a little too basic, hence the closed canopy and resin seat. And some panel lines are wrong. But not even a MiG addict like me can spot all minor errors. It looks very much like a Fulcrum to me!

I like birds in "wrong" clothes. So a russian Cold War jet in NATO colours is of course irresistable!

Thanks for watching! And now: French Fancy II GB!

Yes, Germany "herited" 24 MiG 29 from the former DDR and converted them to NATO Standards. I've been told once that, while they were in active duty in a defense/interceptor role, their main duty was as a sparring partner for practicing dogfights for NATO partners, a role it was considered to be the most capable modern aircraft.

Main issue was the short maintenance interval - while maintenance could be done more or less with field equipment, a full engine overhaul still was necessary I think after less than 500 flight hrs (compared to more than 1.000 hrs in an EF), which made it an expensive plane to operate.

The were given to Poland for a symbolic price in I think 2003.

Josip

Thanks! But no, I could have made it much dirtier... There was a great variety here, from freshly-painted examples, to extremely dirty birds.

I do like that scheme.

Is this kit a rebox of the original Hasegawa kit? That was notoriously inaccurate having been based on photographs with no up close data.

No, it is an Academy release from the beginning. But it has been reboxed by Eduard.

Lovely work! I wasd just about to ask if the radome of these MiGs really weathered to such extremes, when I saw your follow up post of the real thing.

Now I want to build one. :)

Cheers,

Good job Bjorn! Only radio-transparent elements must be of a different grey color

Thanks! But on at least some aircrafts, the radome and these elements were over-painted with a light grey colour, similar to the camouflage, just a little lighter. See the third picture in my answer to another question above.

There were a couple leaving Nellis AFB in 2002 when we were there for Red Flag. Very pleased to catch a glimpse of them then and good to see such a great rendition in model form now!
