DaveJL
Back from a lovely trip away and now back to the bench. The USN F6F-3 build has stalled a bit so want to focus on getting the FAA machine completed. Weathering added with a mixture of Abteilung oils, dry brushing, Tamiya pigment sets and AK pencils. Once dry, I popped on the fuel tank and nav lights before removing the canopy masking and adding the wheels and landing gear doors. Quite happy with it! Will add the antenna line and add the finishing touches tomorrow all being well. On a side note, would anyone have the etch fuel tank straps left over from their build if they didn't use the tank? I have somehow misplaced the other fret for the F6F-3! Cheers and stay safe Dave
dnl42
Very nice! Particularly the weathering, which I have negative skills for... I have 2.5 of the PE straps; 2 are intact, 1/2 is the upper part. I had a brilliant plan to use the upper parts with a full strap but...I'm reminded of a reflection on a mouse and her nest. DaveJL
Calling the FAA MK.II done! Antenna wire (if that's what it is!) added from EZ line then just had to pop on the canopy and prop. My first ever Hellcat and I'm quite pleased with it. More pictures in RFI: I'll try and get the USN machine done in time but looking unlikely at the moment. I'll keep the thread updated! Thanks to all who have commented/followed thus far. DaveJL
Thanks all! I got my backside in gear and blew the cobwebs off the F6F-3. Initially painted the sides with MRP Intermediate Blue but the hue is not right at all - the first time I've experienced this with MRP. Luckily I had an old pot of Tamiya XF-18 Medium Blue which is much better. Once dry, the MRP Sea Blue went on. Now one thing I am not good at is airbrushing demarcation lines freehand, but I think I may have just got away with this one: Happy enough with that. I hope to get the details painted tomorrow - guns, tail wheel, cowling mouth (red for the sharks decal) etc and get some gloss on. This will go right to the wire! DaveJL
Getting there. .50cals, tail wheel, wing antenna and red mouth all painted, some initial 'chipping' applied to the leading edges with thinned down Tamiya Aluminium and a piece of sponge, before an initial coat of gloss going on: A couple more coats of gloss to go on over the next few days then I hope to get the decals on and a panel wash applied on Friday. DaveJL
Race is on to get this one finished. Managed to get the decals on today and sealed them in with another coat of gloss. Generally they went on fine and look good once you peel off the carrier film, which is a delicate operation. The star'n bar on the port side peeled when I removed said carried film so I had to chop up a spare decal to tidy it up. A bit of weathering should hide the worst of it. I added some more 'chipping' to the walkways and around the cockpit sills before popping on the landing gear. Hoping to get a panel wash on and some weathering done tomorrow before adding the last few bits and pieces. Clock is ticking! Thanks chaps, I think I'll make it! Managed to get the panel wash done early this morning, followed by some oil weathering topped off with some Tamiya pastels. Once dry, I was able to pop on the nav lights, propellor and remove the cockpit masking. A few more bits of weathering to finish it off and then it's just the wire on the fuselage and canopy to go on.
