Beemax Nissan 240 RS Safari Rally

Recommended Posts

The Manta and it’s complex colour scheme done , time to move onto a new project . There’s a few in my stash I want to build , but after two challenging kits I thought this would be slightly easier , for a change . Apart from the Marlboro colour scheme it’s basically a black and white build , most of the black I have been spraying Halfords satin black and the white , well , you guessed it Halfords white …..  Having taken advice on the Marlboro colour , some Tamiya TS 36 is on order , so I’ll be put my masking head back on when it arrives .
This particular car is from the 1984 Safari Rally and is driven by Shekhar Mehta and Rob Coombes . Up to that point , Mehta had won the Safari 5 times , but in 1984 he was hit by a bus and the car was badly damaged . Nissan robbed the rear axle from a team chase car to repair Mehtas  car and he managed to finish 5th overall . Sadly , Mehta died in 2006 .
Rather like the Opel Manta 400 , the Nissan 240 RS is a simple , non turbo , 2 wheel drive rally car , albeit a Group B car . It was successful on rough rallies , but was also a fast and reliable National championship car  , a good alternative to Mk 2 Escorts  .

Here’s a picture of the box and it’s contents , pre spraying .

i will be watching this with great interest as I like the look of this kit and i'm building the st165 safari car at the moment.

Gary is there more than one decal sheet in the pack or is there just one?

Just one decal sheet , Scottey . I'm hoping to buy some Marlboro lettering  decals  .

Thanks for letting me know the masking on the bonnet is probably the bit i would find the hardest to get right as masking is one of my weaker areas.

I know the detail up set has some different decals in although i don't know if the Marlboro decals are included it may be worth a look

I'm not a big fan of over priced detail up sets . After the Manta , masking for the Marlboro colours should be a bit easier !

I ve triple wrapped to try and eliminate bleed through , but I bet some will manage to creep  .  Try to get some paint on tomorrow .

Have you tried a light overspray of the base colour to seal the edges of the masking, I find that usually prevents any bleed under the tape/masking.

Got the Tamiya TS36 fluorescent red sprayed onto the heavily masked Nissan today .
In the spray booth , looking like I’ve sprayed it orange !

Before unmasking

Unmasked . Small bits of bleed , some will be hidden under paint and decals . The camera doesn’t show , but maybe an undercoat of bright red before the TS36 , would be the way to go as the finished colour still shows slightly white along seams and edges . I didn’t mask under the roof aerial hole , so it’s got a coat of paint .

And finally look how much masking tape I used !

I really like the color it's a shame about the bleed through could you cover some of it up with decals and weathering?

Some will be painted over and some decalled over , the remaining I will rub away with a cocktail stick and light coat of white paint .

Paint job looks good and very bright.  I don't know if this might help for future masking, apologies if I am teaching to such eggs but I find if I burnish the tape edges down with a wooden cocktail stick it stops the bleed though , some also recommend a coat of klear along the edges to seal them .

Great work so far

I battened the edges down with the end of a modelling paint brush ; it’s amazing where the paint finds it’s way too  , Chris .

I never had any thoughts of building this but your build got me interested. Is there any advantages keeping the sprues in the window openings until paint is done?

I would be afraid to damage the paintwork removing them.

Looking forward to the next step of this build.
