1/48 Airfix Hawker Hunter F5

Recommended Posts

This is my latest build.

1/48 Airfix Hawker Hunter F5 as flown by No.1 Squadron out of Cyprus during the 1956 Suez crisis.

Built OOB. I painted the stripes in preference to using the kit's decals. The camo was air brushed free hand.

This went together quite well as you would expect from recent Airfix offerings although the smaller pieces can be brittle.
The main issue is the leading edge wing inserts which convert what is basically an F6 kit into the F4/F5. One side blended in quite well while the other gave me some grief.
Painted with mainly Tamiya acrylics
XF-54 Dark Sea Grey and XF-81 Dark Green for the camo
Vallejo Metal Color Silver was used for the underside
Weathered with Dark Dirt wash and Abteilung 502 oils

Great work Steve very nicely put together.

Superb effects very nicely stated. Like that very much.

The favourite when I was a boy just after WW11 the spitfire lost it's status.

Very nice photographic works indeed.

Nice looking Hunter.

I think the biggest problem with the wing leading edge inserts are the instructions. I glued the inserts as seperate parts on the respective wings before glueing the leading edges. That way I got an early straight wing leading edge with minimal filling and sanding.

It is a very nice Hunter and thanks for the suggestion regarding the inserts.

Thanks Jens. It never occurred to me to do that but if I strike a similar issue again I’ll give it a go.

Hello Steve,

Beautiful Hunter. Construction, finish and photography =👍

I wish I would/could  keep to one subject.

Very nice job indeed. My friend built this Hunter and used the decal sheet stripes which he said went on like a dream. He was reluctant at first to use them as they have a lot of shapes to get over .
