Back in the 1980s and as part of its modernisation efforts, the Republic of Singapore Air Force chose the General Dynamics F-16 to replace its fleet of aging Hawker Hunters. Under the Peace Carvin I FMS program, the United States sold a total of 8 F-16s (4 As and 4 Bs) to the RSAF. These aircraft were received by the RSAF and were initially based at Luke Air Force Base, Arizona where the Air Force sent a detachment of pilots and ground crew to train under the USAF. On 9 January 1990, these 8 Vipers arrived in Singapore and were inducted into 140 Squadron "Osprey".

This is the Hasegawa F-16A kit built with HobbyDecal turned metal pitot and AoA probes. Decals came from Siam Scale but were not too good so I had to use some of the decals from the kit.

This is a 1/72 Tamiya Spangdahlem F-16C in the original Have Glass scheme, inspired by @Tim Moff's Viper in the last STGB. I weighted the tail, and added a little stand made from clear sprue in the hopes of making it look like it's just touched down for landing.

The build thread is here:

Thanks @trickyrich for running another enjoyable Group Build, and thanks @Hockeyboy76 for continuing the pilot naming tradition ('Rattlesnake' thanks you too)!

For this GB I have used the Revell F-16A to make an aircraft from the 138th TFS of the 174th TFW New York ANG during the early days of Op Desert Storm when they use the GPU-5/A Pave Claw gun pod for close air support. This proved to be not very successful and the Sqn then used conventional weapons for the duration of the war. The build thread for this is here:-

This my 1988 Fujimi 1/72 moulding of the F-16C - probably a block 30 machine with a GE engine but retaining the narrow intake. I ended up using the kit markings for a machine flown by the 52nd TFW based at Spangdahlem Air Base in Germany in the late 1980's - some of that unit's planes took part in the Gulf War in 1990 but not this one I believe.

DSC05790-crop DSC05792-crop DSC05794-crop

I was thinking of adding Lantirn pods but it seems that the Block 30 did not carry them so I have built it pretty much OOB. I added a resin seat, Master brass probes, and substituted an AN/ALQ 131 ECM pod on the centreline instead of the small tank provided in the  kit. The fit was pretty good except for the cockpit insert - the kit could be built as either a C or the 2 seat D and as often happens with that sort of kit there was a choice of two fuselage sections. I also had to provide a couple of bulkheads/blanking plates to close off the rear of the cockpit and the front of the main wheel bay. I also managed to break off one of what I assume are static discharge wicks on the vertical tail - at least Fujimi do provide them but they are very vulnerable. Not a bad kit but more recent ones are probably better. I had a bit of a problem with the decs - some of the stencils are the same colour as the darker grey paint (which probably should be darker but it is what Fujimi recommended) and so are invisible, hence the lack of walkway lines and the markings around the IFR receptacle, and I used stars from a spare sheet.

Anyway that was a quick GB by my standards - thanks to the organisers!

Finally finished, and just in time too!

This is Italeri's 1/48 F-16A from the NATO Fighters boxing.

It is an RNLAF 306th Sqn aircraft fitted with the Orpheus Reconnaissance pod and I used to service the camera system when they turned up RAF Gutersloh in the mid to late 80's Not sure if J-644 was one of them though.

Thoroughly enjoyed this GB, a chance to try a couple of things & do a scheme that had been on my radar for ages. Thanks to @trickyrich for hosting this, my third Gb done in as many months & life is looking better. :) Thanks too to @Jabba & @mungo1974 for help with references material, & the encouragement along the way, it all helped so thanks guys.

Steve.

Thanks to Enzo for shifting this from the open gallery where some silly sod had put it by mistake, to this gallery where he'd intended to put it all along. :(
