RainierHooker
"Field Gray" is a very subjective term when it comes to wartime German uniforms...
RainierHooker
To expound a bit more on the above photo (not my photo nor collection, but I do have a modest collection of original uniforms), my analysis coming from almost 30 years of collecting and research. The top row is largely pre- and early-war issue field gray, about 1938 up until about 1941/42. It is much more uniformly light green-gray, but even still no garments will match perfectly. The middle row left to right: - a grayer wool - probably an officer’s gabardine or fine grade wool, - very gray - typical to mid-war (1942/43) enlisted uniforms when they started using recycled and synthetic fibers, - a “sea foam” green wool typical of garments made from Dutch army stocks, - another greenish wool - this one is typical early-to-mid 1930s German uniforms, - a more grey-green Enlisted combat tunic - again typical of mid-war manufacturing. Bottom row, all typical of late war uniforms: the three on the right appear to be German recycled wool, the fourth from right is made from Italian blue-gray material, and the two on the left are again recycled wool with the one on the far left possibly also of Italian origin.
