1/35 LRDG Chevrolet Command Car & SAS Jeep

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks

Base surround is pretty rough which I will make better when funds permit, other than that I'm calling this one done.

This is my second diorama, the first being the Miniart 36047 country road kit which I added lots of stuff to. Hope not to confuse but although this is my second build its my first scratch built base😱.

This started as just a Chevy AFV build but fellow member and friend Laurie Stewart suggested a diorama with an SAS Jeep. It was a great idea but I wasn't able to. However, if it were not for the kindness and generosity of Laurie who supplied the Jeep and allowed me to do it I would not be able to show this today.  Thanks again Laurie and I hope you like it 🤞

Just a bit of background. The LRDG were absolute masters of desert surveying, making very accurate maps behind enemy lines.  These maps were used by other units including the newly formed SAS.  On the scene you will see two 40gl fuel drums that have been uncovered.  These were covered, camouflaged, meticulously mapped and positioned for emergencies, locations given out to other units.  Fuel could be  a matter of life and death.  If you think of a standard jeep with a 2.2 ltr and the Chevy a 3.5 ltr petrol engine, in low gears over rough terrain must have consumed obscene amounts of fuel. After the north Africa campaign and these elite forces moved on, did they have the time to recover all of them!!.  Begs the question how many are still out there.

So LRDG team surveying and the arrival of an SAS Jeep requiring some much needed petrol.

First pic a bit of an explanation

As Ive probably mentioned before but figures are my nemesis.  I'm really not happy with these, however, Im going to use them as a start and I can use them to see if in the future Ive improved in anyway. If I do perhaps I can give them an IPA bath and do them again.

Hope you folks like

All the best.

Take care & safe

Just in case you did not realise, Si, Vince is also a Channel Islander.

Lives in the northerly climbs of the Island.

They are surrounded by sea up there 🤣

Fantastic diorama! Great builds, painting, detailing and photography. Just the type of diorama I thought about having a go at.

My Grandad did stints with the LRDG and SAS in North Africa. I've still got the cap badges he gave me.

Thanks very much Steve much appreciated👍

You should go for it Steve and dedicate it to your grandad. You could even display his cap badges with it.

A very unique and elite force, a really small unit that ended up at on 350 men.

Very brave men. A thank you to your grandad for his service 👍👍👍

It looks good, even the figures look pretty decent.  Maybe a slight softening of the shadows on the little buggers.

My only real kvetch is the edges of your dio seem a bit...unfinished..

You've probably already done that though, so never mind.

Very nice! 👍

Mmm not in agreement on the edges Tzulscha. I think that is superb way for a diorama. Getting away from those ersatz false looking clinical frames.

Artistic licence & very well done.

Dioramas, in my opinion, should be free not encapsulated by a false border.

For that reason I produce very large diorama filled with 10 or more models. They look real not prim chocolate box stuff.

Pleased that you thought the figures pretty decent.

@LaurieS I am not a real fan of picture frame edges myself, I like an irregular outline.

I try to make my dio bases look like I just took a scoop out of the ground.

I will usually just smooth off edges and paint them matte black.

An old theatre trick I learned back in the day. It tends to make your eye just skip over the edges and onto the dio surface.

(Not to hijack your thread @Simon Dyer, just an illustration)

Hope you do not mind me saying.

On the perimeter cool the edges smooth them off & peter them out to nothing. The black is harsh black always is a nice mellow sand colour would be better washed ou tto virtually nothing.

Try this approach. Apologies Si for the intrusion

Hi Tzulscha thanks for your comments, much appreciated. My figures are shall we say a work in progress.  I do feel a lot better about them now especially after some of the comments I have had.

I did mention right at the beginning of the post that the base surround is a bit rough but will sort out when funds permit.

Thanks again

I like the antenna arrangement, something I wouldn’t have thought to add myself.

Thanks sanfrandragon

I do like to do something different. However my current project is hardly different, Hawker Hunter.

Now I normally get this sort of thing wrong, but would I be right in saying that sanfrandragon has something to do with Wales?

Thanks again

If he arrived on the south coast it'd definately be a climb (The Longest Day when the soldier sticks his head above the ramp and says "Is that all we gotta climb!"),other than that it's up to Condor's bump into anything ferry....

Now that's a decent diorama. Not my skill set, but I might be tempted

Thank you darthspud much appreciated.

Unlike aircraft and cars for example where you have to be almost perfect. With these sort of things the world is your oyster, you can almost do what you like without it being wrong.

Give it a go and I'm sure you will be pleasantly surprised, very satisfying.

Take care
