Cadillac Le Monstre 1:12 scratch

Recommended Posts

My next building is more like an experiment, which I am still able to handle at my age ...

Basically, it's just a matter of having fun with the building itself

It is a Le Monstre race car, which Briggs Cunningham, a pilot and businessman specializing in the automotive industry, promoted Cadillac's first entry into the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
The car, designed by Frick-Tappett Motors, was equipped with an aluminum windshield manufactured by Grumman Aircraft, which used its own wind tunnel for testing.
The car raced at Le Mans in 1950 and took 11th place...

For the construction ... Basically, there are no more precise drawings with dimensions, and from 1950 there are only a few photos available, from the present only photos of reconstructions or replicas.
I start by planning and drawing followed by 3 D resin printing of the engine

I modified the resin semi-finished products of Stromberg carburetors and fitted them with a net

file.php?id=1595453

... and I adjusted the exhaust position

Woh ! very interesting, for sure I'll follow your bid.

I see that you've built a yellow Pocher Bugatti type 50...hum, another thread could be of some interest :)

This will be a good one to see (although not the hardest body to replicate!)

From the sounds of it you have all the photos of the replica/tribute car you want, but I have a couple more from when it ran at Le Mans in 2018 if you want them.

Interesting project.  Did you draw those parts yourself? Nice work, but I don't think they're right for this car.  🤔   The engine seems to be the 1968-76 472/500 design, which is nothing like a 1949-55 331.  The 331 has a different valve layout with the intake ports adjacent and only three exhaust  ports (centre two are siamesed into one outlet).  Also, the gearbox looks like a 1980s T5 5speed?  The car would have had a Cad/Lasalle 3 speed like this: http://forums.cadillaclasalleclub.org/index.php?topic=103110.0

The 5-carb inlet manifold would be similar to this Olds one, but without the coolant crossover, which is above the water pump on the Cad engine: https://www.macsmotorcitygarage.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Oldsmobile-5x2-intake-manifold.jpg

Hope that helps.

Thanks ... Well, I'm not an expert, I'm glad I got at least something that looks like a paint engine.
Basically, I'm just having fun with it and the accuracy of the details isn't important to me, which I won't even see ...
Feel free to write, if you can think of doing something better, I'm happy to hear the opinions of experts and I'm pleased with the interest

Following with great interest: I built the Provence Moulage kit of this car many years ago and love its unique looks :)

Thanks, I also like the shape and history of the car :)

Yeah, and that Bugatti isn't Pocher, it's a metal scratch build  1/18 scale :)

Well, having fun is the main objective.  :)  I was worried I'd put you off posting updates, but it was meant to be constructive.   If you change your mind, the early Cad engine and gearbox are found in several 1/25 kits, so I'd be happy to help with scaling up those.

Here's all I got of it - all two photos. I haven't bothered with the photo of it racing at night as it's not very clear - trying to do a night-time pan isn't particularly condusive to sharp photos. Hope the two below help you though, I suspect that the first one will be more useful. (As said above, these are of the replica, but they claim it was built in a similar way so shouldn't be too far off).

I think it's fair to say that all our group were taken with it when it ran in 2018.

Thank you all for your reactions, I repeat, accuracy or agreement with the original is not important to me. Fun and escape from this crazy time is essential.

... like tonight ...

I am in awe of all of you scratchbuiders, I am amazed at what modellers can do.

This is fantastic and your detailed work is wonderful.

Great job

Thank you very much Chris :)

I'm moving on slowly, the annealing of the leads ... they're probably not right, but it's fun :)

Thank you all for your interest ....
Somehow, once a week, I enjoy building something that should resemble a car ...
Sometimes I also wonder if I didn't take a big bite ...

Oh you definitely took a big bite with this one, but from what I've seen of your skills the crucial thing is that I don't think it's too big a bite. Keep at it and you will end up with a pretty unique model of a pretty unique vehicle.

Keep up the good work.
