Revell's 1:32 Bf 109G-6 (Franz Dorr)

Recommended Posts

While I wait for the decals for my Ju 88C-6b from ICM to arrive (I haven't even cut plastic), I've decided to buy and build this kit. I've been looking up and down for it, and finally got it at a good price.

I'll be painting it as Franz Dörr's Bf 109G-6 Late. This aircraft was stationed at Gossen in Norway until the end of WW2 in Europe in May 1945.

As it's a common thing with Revell Germany models, the kit doesn't come with Swastikas, so I may have to source them from somewhere else (if I decide to put them when the decalling starts). Speaking of decals, they're printed "in Italy for Revell," so I assume that's Cartograf.

I'll begin the kit tomorrow after coming back home from my Covid vaccination trip.

Nice kit. Now you do know there’s an Me109 STGB going on at the moment.

I know, but I won't join, not interested in group builds.

Well, it's 5:15AM Argentina time. I got vaccinated against Covid with the Astra-Zeneca vaccine, and got a bit of fever that has now wind down. So, what to do?

How about some progress of the Bf 109?

Cockpit floor painted and detailed:

Right sidewall painted with yellow fuel lines:

Cockpit tub ready to be closed. This is by far the most detailing I've done on and aircraft cockpit so far:

Hallo

May I give you an advice:

Your paint may be too dark! This photos are the restaurated 109 from Krakau. Several other samples in Austria and Germany show the same.

Happy modelling

It's a deliberate choice. Instead of buying two paints which were very similar, Revell 77 and 78, I decided to use the latter for the cockpit and tyres. Revell Aqua paints are expensive in Argentina.

Just come back from a nap and 39° of fever.

Here's today's progress, the propeller. The sharp eyed if you will notice I forgor to add the retainer for the blades. It was added yesterday after checking the instructions (something I need to do more frequently, I glued the incorrect guns and incorrect radiator).

Winspar glued under the cockpit:

Here's another piece that may or may not be correct. Revell doesn't tell you which one goes, so I glued the one with the small opening. After checking Scott van Aken's article on Modelling Madness, I decided to remove this piece and glue the one with the bigger opening.

Cockpit installed:

Here you can see I glued the wrong radiator piece. It would later be removed and the correct one installed.

Hi guys! After two days with fever, I was able to pick the model up again. Here's the most recent progress with it:

Hello guys! Some major progress today, I completed the airframe assembly and I'm ready to paint the model. But before that, a scrub with some alcohol to remove the grease from my fingers and some paint drops.

I thought the way Revell engineered the installation of the flaps was fiddly, but the opposite happened, they have very clear attachment points, so they were glued in the down position and left to harden.

My wife reacted very badly to the AZ

Luckily she's fine now. I wince at the thought of getting the second one in September.

Black and Yellow RVD band painted. I'm pretty pleased of my painted band. Revell supplied a decal for it, but the last time I tried to use a decal, it didn't conform to the shape of the model.

Just something to rant about. I'm well ahead on the build of the kit, so far ahead that I added the finishing touches an hour ago. The rant is, everything was going fine, until I accidentally broke the tailwheel (Revell's method of attaching it with a weak strut). Had to use CA to fix it.

I also think Revell missed to include the boot that is present on the short tail wheeled 109Gs (Hasegawa got it right).

Alright, after the rant, and having checked the tail wheel had fully cured, I feel confident enough to show the aircraft fully decalled.
