Bandai 1/16 Rolls Royce Balloon Car

Recommended Posts

So I won this on ebay (been wanting it for ages) was a bit worried it might be a glue bomb as it was already started (wasn't packaged very well as lots of bit broken off) luckily nothing that can't be fixed, it's (so far anyway) quite easy to dismantle. I'm looking forward to this.
The person who built it didn't paint anything just glued it together so no worries about incompatible paints, although it's not a glue bomb there's still a fare amount of glue to get rid of.

I can remember building this kit and reviewing it for Sca!e Models magazine when it first came out. From what I can remember it went together well. It had wire wheels that built up on a supplied assembly jig to thread black monofilament line from hubs to rims.

I wish you well with this restoration that should build up into a very nice model using up to date model finishing products.

Hi all well the Rolls needs far more work than first thought (not strictly authentic but I've decided the bolts and nuts were gold plated just to add a bit of interest) there is a major problem that the brackets which hold the fuel tank are broken off and the parts are not in the box (in fact on closer inspection there are lots of broken parts and missing bits but hopefully nothing I can't make.

Coming along very nicely. Hope the missing parts do not  prevent finishing the kit. Checked up on one on Ebay but the price was OTT

I've never heard of the Silver Ghost being called a "balloon car" before. Do you know where that originated?

Nice start anyway, I hope there are no important bits missing!

That’s going to be interesting @kpnuts, I’ve started a Bandai Mercer Raceabout, probably from the same series of kits, but got a bit bogged down with other issues at the moment. I’ll be following along with this one if I may?

I scrubbed with a stiff brush sand colour on the seat so it looked all patchy then lightly Sprayed satin black lightly till you could just about see the sand colour through it.

Everyone keeps asking me how I did the seats heres how, first sand coloured background

Then light coats of satin black till you can just see the sand under it.

Then polish the satin till the sand shows through.

There is so much missing in this kit it may end up being bin fodder, lots missing from engine, lots missing broken or glued in the wrong orientation.

The silver lady is missing to be honest I wonder if it's worth the effort or if I have the skills.

It definitely wasn't a bargain.

Engine looks great, I like your leather effects on the seats too, will have to remember that .  Shame some bits missing, hope this doesn't become bin fodder.  Are you able to scratch the bits?

Great work
