1/72nd Spitfire HF VIII - Eduard

Hi All,

(Big thanks to @Enzo Matrix for pulling this GB together - Hope you get sorted)

Here's the first of my efforts for this weekend - Usually I end up with about 6 hours left at the end of Monday to try and squeeze a build in, but for once I'm ahead of myself. Makes a change.

I've got a number of the Eduard Spitfires in the stash but I haven't built any so far, as I have a bit more time to play with, I thought it was time to see if it's possible to do an Eduard weekend edition model in an actual weekend!

So here we are - Going for the total of 24 hours split into mini sessions.

Session started with the aid of a breakfast cob delivered by my Stepdaughter - Bacon, Lorne sausage, fried egg and black pudding, eaten before I realised that I should have taken a photo.

The start.

But what's this?

I'm one of those who think that Spitfires look odd parked on the ground, so I build my 1/72nd scale ones wheels up and with a pilot.

Unlike the Airfix Spitfires, the Eduard ones don't seem to lend themselves to being built "In flight" so there may be some further adaptation needed...

So far, the cockpit has gone together well (I like the engineering on this model already), the only modification done so far was the removal of the leading edge of the seat to accommodate the pilot.

Session ended as I had to collect Mrs B, then do the food shop, with the cockpit mostly constructed, the wing built up and the internal painting started.

3 hours 44 minutes so far.

Session 2 on Saturday,

Cockpit complete

And before I knew it, I had a complete airframe.

What can I say, it went together nicely and only a little bit of filler needed - Almost certainly due to this modeller's cackhandedness rather than any problem with the kit....

The undercarriage that I did on one side seems to have worked as well - I used the undercarriage door, cut down the undercarriage leg slightly and only used the one half of the wheel.

It was then time to sign off.

Another 2 hours 14 minutes - Total now 5 hours 58 minutes.

Sunday...

Didn't get anything done during the day, Mrs.B allocated me gardening and the usual catering duties....

Picky tea - Centred around a smoked gammon joint that had been in the slow cooker immersed in cola all day.

Finally time to get down the shed but as is normal, I wouldn't be alone....

Time to start

Preshade

Airbrushed Humbrol Medium Sea Grey upper surfaces - New style pot worked after a fashion but better with Vallejo thinners than Humbrol's own in my experience.

Time to give up for the night.

It'll be interesting to see a Mk.VIII in that scheme, they were rare, probably because of the Mk.VII.  There were a few in italy, including at least one American.

It was probably a F Mk.VIII, despite the wingtips which were initially standard on the Mk.VIII.  The only batch of HF Mk.VIIIs I could find all went to Australia or India.

Sorry - Wasn't finished....

Monday started well with brownie points earned by taking Mrs.B to a car boot sale (No takers so had to bring her back)

Then took the good lady for breakfast at Tesco (We know how to live!)

After that, we had to pop to see the mother in law, mostly so I could trim her bush....

That's us sorted for bay leaves for quite a while.

Back home and I was released to the Iancave for a couple of hours before we were due to go round to friends for a meal.

Main task was to get the underside painted in PRU Blue - Masked the top of the airframe using frog tape for the first time.

Xtracrylix PRU Blue airbrushed on the underside.

And with that it was time to stop and aim to finish it later on.

Another 1 hour 18 minutes - Total now 10h 42m.

Went over to our friends where we had, on the warmest day of the year so far, a Christmas turkey dinner!

Back home and there was a couple of hours left to complete it before the deadline.

Went out to the Iancave again, pursued once more by the flop eared loon.

Unfortunately, this time he didn't have a squeaky toy in his mouth and started barking and yelping - Honestly, you'd think I was trying to murder him!!

Instead of sitting in the cave, he carried on barking, I was left with no choice but to give up and go back in the house.

I've been doing bits and bobs on it since and once it's completed I'll post the pictures here.

Well done to all who took part.
