Bf109E-3 number two!! White Nine 1/48 Airfix Finished ✅

Recommended Posts

This is my second project and this will be White nine based at Friedrichshafen in 1940 and it also has a altered camouflage consisting of RLM 70/71/02 uppersides and RLM 65 as a lower camouflage.

In this build i also will be using one of four cockpit sets i bought together from Hightech for four fifty each!

As i already wrote in my first build these were not for the Airfix kit but they do fit..

Will be starting this next week when i am back home !!

Another great choice of scheme Jan :speak_cool: They certainly didn't waste any space with those wing crosses either!

Well if they don’t see my plane let’s show them that I am German....

This scheme and the first one (Yellow One) that I will do are two out of four of the HADmodels sheet 48149 and they are all four pretty different and attractive..

Hmmm this is going to look like a production line....

I used Yellow one as a pattern aircraft and that worked out well so the bulkheads with floor are beaten into shape for the other three aircraft.

Sidewalls are prepared as well for the resin parts.

As the resin parts are quite thick they need to be thinned down considerably and that takes a lot of time so those are for tomorrow’s to do list😉

I'm doing an Airfix 1/48 109  four aircraft production line building straight from the box and it feels like an age since I started, very nice kits and I'm sure there are some economies of scale .There  is a shed load of yellow to paint and this is where I see the production line paying dividends.

Looking forward to seeing your resin pits painted  up

Cheers Alistair

Looking forward to see your foursome finished as well.
I certainly believe that these will be looking nicely straight from the box, I was lucky to have these resin sets being sold for grabs.

Today I lost a wing😜

I did a search for the main wing of yellow one and I though that the carpet monster came in to dine as I could not find the thing....

After a search party af almost one and a half hour it came to mind that it was probably in the box of Hobbycraft 109D as did some comparisons two days ago!

And indeed it was in that box🙃

Well I am building four of these and I do think it would be easier to put all of these in one build thread as most steps are the same 🤔

The wings can be a pain or not !

It seems that the demoulding isn’t a consistent procedure as some wings will be build without warpage and some are with warpage.

Just dryfit first and see if they are not bending upwards in this case as three of them did😕

the solution for this was simply sand a bit away from the lower wing that fits to the upper half wingtip.

51247961517_8a3771da02_b.jpg

Then the panels, the one on right is trimmed and those on the left are as they come ..

These are Yahu panels and where intended for the eduard boxing wich has a completely different shape.

As you can see they differ in color though they are the same panels ..

Thankfully this even happened in WWII or else I had a problem.

Hereby a small oversight of the production line 😀

The cannon inserts in the wing do leave significant gaps that need filling.

I was surprised by their bad fitting😕

Finally all cockpit sidewalls are also thinned down and ready to be installed..

Photo below shows the difference in thickness..

That's the biggest let-down on an otherwise pretty nice kit, for me.  I can live with the skinny prop (or replace it with a resin AM one) but those inserts really detract from the pleasure of the build as the rest of the kit is so nice.

However, your production line is looking good - I'm looking forward to seeing this play out.

Thank you sir, I can’t complain about these kits as they to look like a Bf109..

These wil probably not the last 109s I have build as I do like the looks of the forthcoming Wingsy kit as wel😀

Already build the Tamiya 109E and even that one has it shortcomings!

At least in this case I have four Airfix kits in the build and three of these kit equals the price of one Wingsy kit😉

Hi Jan,

Nice progress, I will enjoy seeing the resin cockpits get all painted up. Those Yahu instruments look brilliant. As to the Airfix cannon fairings - oh well, Airfix just keeping up our modelling skills. Can't have life too easy.

You are right Ray there is no such thing as easy in the modelling business, I like to make it myself difficult as well as nothing in these pits is for the Airfix kit.

Started to fit everything together and made the last tweeks ...

All cockpit floors and bulkheads are numbered to match a particular fuselage as everything is not exactly the same fit!

I also scraped the resin trimming wheel off on the left side as there was just one wheel and there supposed to be two and is was a little bulky...

These pits are probably for the hobbycraft 109 and these are a little more spacious ( tested it in a hobbycraft 109D that’s in my stash that has the same cockpit set and this one was started allready by another modeller)
Anyway I replaced the wheels by the original Airfix ones wich are smaller and thinner....

Looking busy already😁 and ready for paint..

I am not going to give them all the same interior color as these 109’s cockpits came in RLM 02 but also in RLM66.

Very nice work Jan, the cockpit looks really good and will look fantastic when painted up.

Thank you very much🙂

They are now in a base color of Humbrol 67 ...as I have seen Bf109E’s with a interior color of RLM66 during the BOB period some will stay in this color and the others in RLM02...

All the seats will be done in RLM02

Today some progress has been made on the wheelwells ..

These wells do have an inconvenient split in the middle!

I have glued these firmly together and scraped the walls with a surgical swann-morton and then I sanded these with a glasfiber pencil.
I did remove some ejector marks as well as they were quite visible in the middle of the wheelwell...
Thankfully no putty needed in here!

Again some work done on the pits..

Walls and floors recieved a subtle wash of matt clear varnish mixed with black waterpaint.

Seatbelts from Eduard set FE812 used and the first two sets were installed wrongly..lets say bottom up😂
In the end they look good I think as these are quite nicely painted by Eduard.

I managed to get them corrected quite easily, gunsights installed but two were missing their sighting glass...

Still more work to be done but I think it is worth the effort..

Wrong way up🙃

And corrected😀 in the end I think no one probably wouldn’t noticed it !

It has been a productive week as the cockpits are fitted and the fuselages are buttoned up..

The cockpit parts are drybrushed as well with a light pastel color to give it more depth before being put in..
Tried this for the first time this way and I like it!

A gaggle of one o nine’s..

51270918378_00347a0ae6_b.jpg

I certainly do like the overall fit as you almost don’t need any filler in the wing and fuselage..

Also kept the seams on the aft fuselage half’s as it should be.

on the E4 and E7 One o Nine’s I had a bomb or tank selector panel installed .

Not the best picture but it gives an idea..

These are quite nice kits aren't they.

Thank you 🙏 they are quite nice and the fit is really good.

I certainly do like the offset of the vertical stabiliser and the shape of it to counter the torque...

Having build the Tamiya one this year I can say that both have thier downsides and upsides but they equal in build fun!

Thank you Ray, still these cockpits gave me some fit problems with the canopy’s in the end.

Due to the instrument  panels the fuselage were a little wider on some kits than they should be 😟.(It is something I underestimated)

Nevertheles there is a lot of plastic so I could sand it down untill everything settled as it should😉
I had some inspiration during the build ..

What sandpaper do you use? That is a stunning cockpit, I can only aspire :)

Thank you for the compliments, I use different types depending on what I need to sand...

As for the cockpit sidewalls I used a diamond small flat file and in the end a 400 Grit waterproof sandpaper...

The diamond file and sandpaper has been used in a combination with water to keep dust at a minimum.....
For the fuselage and wing seams i use al kinds of tools like the diamond file and the  400 grit sandpaper.

For the more difficult accessable area’s I use the infinity flat sand set which I really like...you can attach all kinds of sand paper to it if you have some double sided tape ( they sell the sandpaper with a sticky side from infinity as a set with these sand plates)

51340904243_0190f539f3_b.jpg

These Airfix kits do have a pebbly surface and to deal with this in order not to show through the paint I sand the kit with Tamiya or Infinity soft sand pads 1500 grit..
Spinners painted and after this I sanded away the irregularities that showed thought the paint and resprayed these again....

Blemishes really show trough these MRP paints.

Sprayed the seam area’s with MRP primer to find irregularities wich i did of course....🤔

51339949457_b83a9c0ebd_b.jpg

Sprayed the wheels in the black primer and the tires will get a rubber black/gray finish.
