franky boy
Hi everyone I’d like to join in the fun with a Tamiya E-4. I’ve only built this kit once before and that was back in the year 2000 but I remember it being up to Tamiya’s usual high standards in terms of fit and so on I I had another in the stash so here goes. I haven’t decided on a colour scheme yet and have an Xtradecal sheet with a few good options on its way in the post so we’ll see. Anyway here’s the box and the sprue shots. franky boy
Hello chaps Here’s update number 1! I had a session getting all of the cockpit, radiator wells and undercarriage parts off of the sprues so that everything could have a coat of RLM 02. Mr colour. Once this his was done I did all of the detail painting for the cockpit and applied the decals for the instrument panel and the seat belts applied a gloss coat, wash, flat coat and some dry brushing. C0D9E173-5211-4A1D-9ECC-AADF1A646E43 by James Halls, on Flickr The seat belts were applied to some kitchen foil in an attempt to get a bit more of a 3D effect. The instrument panel looks quite good but the seat belts don’t look great tbh. They’re stuck on now and I can’t be bothered to strip them of so probably close the canopy and live with them. 6BB538A7-AD8A-4104-BC4C-79EDF021EFCB by James Halls, on Flickr And the side walls. Sorry no photo. The decals also turned up this week and I’ve decided to go for this a/c based in Greece in 1941. It’s pretty similar to BoB paint schemes but I like it. 6C23DC5A-D712-42D5-AE0B-9946FCB285F5 by James Halls, on Flickr Thats all for now. Thanks for looking and happy modelling. franky boy
Hello chaps Things have moved on at a pretty good pace this week. This kit really does go together very easily. The fuselage is together and has been mated to the wings. The canopy masked and tail planes attached. There aren’t that many seams on a 109 but she’s now ready for a seam check and a coat of primer. franky boy
Hello chaps I didn't realize how long it had been since I posted an update. Anyway there's been to much footie on the telly to watch! Once everything was seam checked and I was happy I started with the yellow nose and rudder. These had a prime with Mr Surfacer white and then Mr Color RLM04 over that. All paints are Mr Color by the way. AA9D9659-3947-4868-ABBC-C46A4DB8F805 by James Halls, on Flickr ABCB9FB5-D9D0-473B-BA02-EA75BEC42DE7 by James Halls, on Flickr Once this was done I primed everything else in Mr Surfacer 1500 black. Sorry no pic of this but you can guess what it looked like. I then followed as others have done in this GB and mottled on RLM 65 to the undersides and fuselage sides followed by a blending coat. E0F2AE3D-C50E-4256-B424-26E42D5DA4E3 by James Halls, on Flickr Then onto the upper wings and fuselage. RLM 02 first. 5232BD20-64FF-4E79-8D40-D618E5BB87D3 by James Halls, on Flickr Tamiya thoughtfully provide a to scale plan of the camo pattern so used this to mask where appropriate. ED006DE5-848F-4B47-9C8E-1B9EE747D017 by James Halls, on Flickr This is how she came out after a gloss coat of GX100. I was quite pleased with the result. 5E4D3996-C55B-4D7F-A422-A7E3DD0EC9A2 by James Halls, on Flickr Then onto decaling and that's where the fun started! I'm using Xtradecals which are printed by Microscale. I haven't used them much in the past and haven't heard anything bad about them but I couldn't get the black crosses to stick and stay in place. They just kept lifting off and wouldn't stick. The other markings weren't as bad and as soon as they were down I put a coat of Kleer over each one. 071EA79C-82DB-4D3B-A112-256FB1F07D0C by James Halls, on Flickr I ended up just peeling off all of the crosses apart from one and used the Tamiya ones supplied in the kit instead with copious amounts of Mr Softer and Setter which worked a treat. The proper ones not the Neo ones. 7E62E708-0E76-444A-9EB1-C12061C5354A by James Halls, on Flickr C298E01C-BDEC-45AC-BE21-85A04D197B47 by James Halls, on Flickr Anyway after mishap this is where it's at right now and I'm happy with it. AB54DDF9-F97C-4DC6-84FB-769BE4413609 by James Halls, on Flickr Next will be a matt coat and on with some weathering. Thanks for looking. Questions and comments welcome as always. Thanks Bob. Yep, I’ve been masking and spraying at least the national markings lately as I’m so rubbish at decals. This is a timely reminder why🙂 On 7/10/2021 at 5:29 AM, Ray_W said: Hi James, Looking good. Great recovery with the decals and original brew Gunze decal solution. How I like that stuff. franky boy
Hello chaps All finished! Just a bit of weathering from a Flory models dark dirt wash, some oil streaking on the underside, some dry brushing with Mr Metal 214 dark iron and finally some weathering around the wing roots with some oils since the last update. And here she is. C807D360-EA48-42EA-BE31-7F16B55D0F61 by James Halls, on Flickr AC410F83-F32B-47EE-9CC7-ED25CA7B8A34 by James Halls, on Flickr My decal woes continued. There should be another shield emblem on the cowling on the starboard side as per the port. When I was rubbing off the wash, very gently, it shattered into a thousand pieces. Drat! 4C522122-A4AC-4975-9890-C559958D012B by James Halls, on Flickr F1C77080-71F6-49F9-9471-E74B01125336 by James Halls, on Flickr You can see in this shot I had some silvering that I just couldn't get rid of on the red wing walkway signs. I really should have painted these. I was rummaging through the decal stash last night and found an old Aeromaster sheet from the 90's with the same scheme as you used for your Emil so I'm going to have to add that to my list of 109's to build. 14 hours ago, Roberto said: I like it!
