Russian Destroyer 'TASZKIENT' (The Blue Beauty) Trumpeter 1/350

Recommended Posts

Welcome aboard fellow BM'ers.

I like to build something that is slightly unusual, my previous IJN Escort was fun and I'm hoping for the same with this.

The 'Tashkent' was built in the Italian Oto Yard in Livorno and I think she looks very Italian and almost futuristic.

She was nicknamed "The Blue Beauty" or "Blue Cruiser", (Cruiser because she was very nearly the size of a cruiser) because she was delivered from the yard to the Russian navy painted blue. I believe she was painted grey eventually, but I thought what the heck and have done her in blue.

Unsurprisingly, given her shape she was quite quick, with a nominal service speed of 39 knots and on trials she reached and maintained 44.4 knots.

So, here I go and I hope I do her justice.

This box art shows her in the 1942 colour, but I'm going for her 1941 livery, accurate or not I think she looks good.

The hull and deck are painted.

I've drilled out the scuttles (not sure why I insist on doing this)

There are decals for the Red Star and the name, not sure if that's going to work, we'll see.

The beginning of the bridge build. Looks more like it belongs to something from Star Trek.

PE fitted and ready to paint.

Gidday, take away that funnel section of the bridge in the second last photo and I think you have a conning tower of a post WW2 Russian submarine (well, to me, anyway 🙂). I think blue would look good, something unusual and different. Looking forward to seeing more of this. Regards, Jeff.

What a beauty, & super fast too! Nice to see a model of something not maybe so popular in the west. Must have been a complicated delivery in 1941. Good luck with the build, nicely done so far 👍

Gidday again, I've got a copy of "Janes Fighting ships of WWII" but I couldn't find this ship mentioned. I looked her up through Google, it appears she was one of a kind, and very fast. Plus the blue paint gets a mention. Regards, Jeff.

As you say, not a lot of info for this ship. But I did find this site, ok it’s a game site, but there seems to be a lot of historical information about her.

Either way, I think she is one of those ‘untold stories’ of WW2
I just need to find some examples of rigging/wires to really finish her.

Good morning and Happy Bank Holiday.

Bit of paint added to the bridge, oh and a few strands of rigging.

I thought I'd dry fit a few sub-assemblies just to get an idea of progress. It's coming on quite well and is certainly an elegant ship.

Off out into the sunshine, been a long time coming.

Gidday Jon, yeah agreed, an elegant ship. I'd hate to have to scratch build that fwd superstructure with everything rounded like that. I guess with the speed she could do streamlining could be important. That seems an unusual location for the aft twin AA mounting, immediately abaft Y turret. Regards, Jeff.

It’s a fairly unusual ship, all round really.

There is a raised platform to go around the aft funnel, which has six AA guns.

Thanks Beefy. I do enjoy building ships, a lot more than I thought I would. Time just goes by without notice, no bad thing, given the 💩 in the country at the mo. The rest of the stash of AFV & Aeroplanes is gathering a bit of dust.

Interesting - and I definitely agree about the Star Trek look

Rob

It’s nice to build too.
Rob. I have just ordered the Mirage kit HMS Anchusa, which I see you built a little while ago, do you have any recommendations with regards any aftermarket parts ?

I'm going to say it's finished.

I've added railings to the Port side and will add the other side later. Then just need to add a bit of weathering.

Had a bit of a disaster with the rear mast, it (meaning me) broke, after I'd added wires. Which made repairing it very fiddly, it sort of ok, just don't look too close.

I'll put a few photos in RFI.

Thanks to all of you who have followed this build and offered advice and encouragement. Both of which are always welcome.
