shortCummins
Now that the green/grey camo is complete its time to cover it with some Extra Dark Sea Grey as suggested by the Montex colour call out. I’m using MRP-114 Extra Dark Sea Grey BS640 WWII RAF, spayed in light passes so that (hopefully) the “old” camo’ shows through without being too obvious? I thinned the MRP-114 approx 50/50 with some unicorn tears, also known as Mr Color Leveling thinner, and sprayed several light coats, I lost count after 5. The green areas had more coats than the grey. In “real life” the under camo’ is a little more noticeable than in these photos, not much more and if you look at the model from a distance it looks grey, the closer you get the more noticeable the green areas are, that was just what I was after. Chris, your idea worked really well, thanks for sharing 👍 Next I’ll be adding the radiator fairing and removing the Montex masks in preparation for weathering. until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins) 6
shortCummins
The radiator filters were given a coat of Xtreme Metal AK479 aluminium and then a wash of Tamiya black panel liner… …then glued in place… …and then hidden under the radiator fairing. Next the Montex roundels and aircraft code masks were removed. The upper wing roundels need a little touch-up as I misaligned the Montex mask allowing some of the white base to show through. I also removed the liquid mask to reveal the aluminium wing roots. Next I’ll be fixing the wing roundels and then starting on the weathering. until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins)

Cheers, Roger thank Guys I'm really pleased with the result of the overpainted camo' and, to me, it makes sense that this is how it would have been "rush job" under pressure and low resources and all that. I've fixed the red centres so they don't look like an eclipse now. rgds John(shortCummins)
shortCummins
The wing roundels were “fixed” by reapplying the Montex mask and spraying the red. As Montex masks are made from “vinyl”, providing you are reasonably careful they can be reused making them perfect if/when you make mistakes aligning them as often I do! As a bonus you could also reuse them on another build. Once the red had dried everything was given a protective gloss coat of Intermediate Gauzy Agent in preparation for some oil washes. A mixture of different clay washes were used to pick out the panel lines. Upper camo’, Ultimate weathering washes… Light dirt After 10 minutes or so, once dried the majority was rubbed off. This didn’t quite give me the effect I was after so I applied a Concrete wash straight over the light dirt. Underside… Dark dirt I also took advantage of the glossy surface to apply the aircraft code number decals. Next I’ll carry on with the weathering. until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins)

shortCummins
Some chipping was applied to the wing leading edges and then the airframe was given a matt coat go vallejo acrylic varnish to “dull” the paint and also to help the 502 Abteilung “oils” that I’ll use for weathering to adhere better. I decided to start with the “crud” build up around the machine gun ejection ports. Two oil colours were used ABT002 sepia and ABT005 smoke, small dots of colour were appleid with a cocktail stick and then blended/spread with a lightly moistened, odourless turpentine, brush in the direction of the airflow. The Spitfire was notorious for oil leaks, I found these photos on the old interweb that I could use as examples for where to add the leaks. For these I used both ABT510 starship filth and ABT092 ocher applied in the same way as previously. Next I’ll work on the “top” of the airframe. until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins)

Just working out what to crib thanks Fritag 99% of how I build "anything" I've borrowed from others, some of it works some of it debatable but each build is a learning experience 12 hours ago, bigbadbadge said: Hi John it does look very nice and I like the subtle weathering. Great work Chris thanks Chris after I took the photos I realised that I'd forgotten to add anything for the machine-gun "powder burns", so I've added them now... perhaps its a little too much now? knowing when to stop is another "skill" that we all need to learn. rgds John(shortCummins)
shortCummins
Once again 502 Abteilung oils were used for the weathering on the “top” of the aircraft. ABT165 faded white was used as a filter along the engine cowl and leading edge of the wings to try and simulate sun bleaching. ABT510 starship filth for the machine gun streaks. ABT002 sepia, ABT005 smoke for the exhaust stains with ABT240 cream brown blended into the centre of these. ABT002 & ABT510 starship filth were used for the fuel staining. The whole airframe will get another matt coat to help protect its current appearance before any further weathering, this will also give me a chance to “sleep on it” to see if any more work is required, currently I don’t think it needs ant more however I’m tempted to enhance/exaggerate the exhaust staining. Next I’ll get to work on the under carriage. until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins)
bigbadbadge
Hi John Looking good, please don't think I am being critical but IMHO the machine gun deposits may be a tad overdone, and the oil staining underneath the main fuselage a bit under done if that makes sense. It is your model though fella and I love it so not a criticism at all. Hope that makes sense. Chris

Chris Hi Chris I don't take it as "unwanted" or unwarranted criticism, more as encouragement to either get better, aren't we all trying too?, or a different method to achieve an effect. Let me say that I agree with you about the gun gunk, knowing when to stop is a skill as much as knowing "how to", giving yourself time to reflect is always? time well spent. I've just sprayed the whole thing with another matt coat so I'll wait to see how that changes the look, sometimes I find it can either exaggerate or diminish the oil weathering. If, "sods law", the gun gunk shows more, I think it will, and the oil stains less, I can adjust either by adding more oils or misting a "blend coat" to tone them down. I've done this before, its "tricky" but you can get some interesting results, sort of a "mid-paint" pre-shading effect. While I was spraying her the exhaust stains appear to have disappeared, so they'll need to be looked at and that when I can make the required adjustments to the rest of the weathering. Keep the suggestions coming, they are appreciated 👍 rgds John(shortCummins)

shortCummins
All of the undercarriage components were spray with UMP/Stynylrez black primer. Followed by a coat of Xtreme metal AK 479 aluminium as a base colour. The wheel hubs and covers were sprayed the same colour us the underside Tamiya XF-19 sky grey. All of these were then treated with Tamiya panel liner(s) black and brown to pick out the details. Both tyres were painted with Tamiya XF-85 rubber black and then alight coat of XF-63 German grey towards the centre of the wheel and XF-24 dark grey along the surface of the tyre it touches the ground. The wheel hubs were then fitted to the wheels and some Tamiya black panel liner run along where the rubber meets the hubs. These will be fitted to the aircraft after I revisit the weathering, however next I’ll work on the exhausts. until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins)
shortCummins
yesterday I gave to upper camo' another coat of matt varnish, I'm guessing that it had some sort of reaction with the oils I used for weathering as its dried a milky white... I'm thinking that its an issue with the oils as the rear of the fuselage is OK, I'm guessing that perhaps they hadn't cured enough, I normally leave them 3 or 4 days before adding varnish and I only left them 2 days this time, also it was the last of the bottle of varnish and perhaps it wasn't mixed/thinned enough? also it has a chalky texture so, I'm going to give it a light sanding and then another matt coat and see what its like in the morning. assuming that doesn't "fix" it I'll re-do the top camo', or at least part of it, so I might be late starting the Hellcat group build rgds John(shortCummins)
